So I did a compression test the other day and in cylinders 4,3,and 2 they were 113 and below, and had oil chillin' on top of the piston. That would explain the burning oil that I thought was the valve cover gasket, which that is bad as well. So now I get to tear it all apart and rebuild it:buttrock

While I am there, I plan on cams, cam gears, and a chip. This should wake it up some lol

Any suggestions on what company to get all this from?

Well, the best bang for your buck will be e36 m3 cams. You'll want to find a good used set, I'd expect prices to be in the $500 and up range. By cam gears I assume you mean adjustable cam gears. Why? You already have that with Vanos, that's what Vanos does. You don't really need it on the exhaust side. BTW, adjustable cam gears don't make more power, they just change the peak where you make the power at. Having Vanos do it for you just flattens the torque curve.

So far as chips go, there's a few good options. Search for m50 chip and you should come up with a million hits.

Why would I rice it out like that? My car is not an ///M so it doesn't deserve those badges. Nothing pisses me off more then seeing the same exact car I have, with ///M5 badges NEXT to the 525i badge, (no joke, I almost killed myself)

There was a thread about that recently, hence the joke.

OK, since my engine is not that new, either, what are the best options for a rebuild? Can the M50 be rebuilt into a 2.8 liter motor, or would that be too much work? Any other improvements, seems to me if the money needs to be spent, better get as much bang for the buck as possible... Otherwise a used motor can be purchased for a few hundre dollars, I know a rebuild would cost more/take more time.

I'm in the same boat here. My engine is gonna go caput very soon. Burns too much oil and leaks to much oil, and I can't keep up. Oil in the spark plugs, starting to get some rod knock, etc. I hate working on engines, so this is something I'll have to get done by a shop. With 230k miles, I'd think it would be a better idea to find another motor with less miles and swap, rather than to rebuild. Not sure what kind of condition the bottom ends are typically in for M50's with this kind of mileage.

Sorry if this is a threadjack, but I thought it might be worth answering in a thread that's already made on the subject, rather than start a new one.

David, if it were me I'd seize the moment and look into an M52 swap. Remember that RVAE34 has info on the swap.

Would an S52 be an option? I wouldn't mind that backed with a 5-speed:)

It's a very doable option.

You can just buy an s52 and drop it in with VERY little modding. Most of the parts you'll need will already be on your m50, such as oil pan, dipstick tube etc... I believe there's a water line you'll need to change a fitting on, but other than that it's a fairly direct swap.
