I have a 1994 530iT with stock radio set up. The PO thought the Right side speakers were blown - with the radio, the noise or sound from the right side front speaks is just static. Loud static. Now and then, the static will stop and the speakers will work okay.

I took out the speakers and checked them, they seem to be in perfect working order.

Does anyone have any ideas? Thoughts or suggestions ?!?! There was also a CD changer in the back which I have since removed. Could it be the head unit going wrong?

I had a similar problem, where you would get static when turning the volume knob. Sometimes, depending on when you stopped, the static would remain when you let go. There was a product that you could spray under the knob that solved the problem. I think it was called Nu Trol. I'll check tommorrow.

Contact cleaner on the volume knob pot.

Will an auto shop know what contact cleaner is and will they have it? Also, my static is constant and pretty darn loud! Think I might be having the same symptoms with the volume knob?

electronics shop will know. Or you can do it yourself. Any electronics supply shop in an industrial park will carry the stuff.

This is what I use http://www.mgchemicals.com/products/404b.html

Hokay... $11.39 later - after acquiring a Contact Cleaner - the static is still there. Did I use it wrong? I just removed the volume control knob and sprayed.

I have tried the cleaner and the static is still there. Today, I decided to get cave-man a bit and tapped on the volume control knob. It seemed to have an effect.

Does this get defective on these radios? Anyone know if this is fixable or not? Can the stereo be dismantled and re-assembled?
