I need to replace the rear brake rotors and pads on the 535, but I want something that feels OEM. I replaced the pads on my 330 with some axxis low dust pads, but I don't like the lack of bite compared to OEM. So forget dust, I don't care if there is a dusty explosion every time I come to a stop, I just want good feel. I looked on autohausaz and am thinking about Balo rotors with mintex pads. For the rears (since I am only doing the rears) it is looking like 115 bucks w/ a new wear sensor. Is that a good price?

Maybe I'm in over my head here, but if you want OEM feel and you're fine with dust, how about OEM? :D

Well I don't want to go to the dealer for this stuff, and it seems like all the online websites contradict each other on what is "OEM" for this car.

Jurid is OEM as far as I know. RealOEM has "Jurid 187" in the additional notes for brake pads. You could probably find these pads for sale at places other than the dealer. Personally, I use Raybestos QS Ceramic pads and like them a lot. They are low dust and bite hard enough to give the ABS a run for its money. I think the QS line has been discontinued unfortunately.

well, I'm in canada so I ordered them from autopartsway.ca but I think you can buy them from the group buy / sponsored seller forum like here http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum/showthread.php?t=587239&highlight=pbr+axxis

Hmmm, so from them I could get brembo blanks and Axxis ultimates + wear sensor etc for 148 shipped. Would this be a better way to go compared to the balo/mintex combo as far as OEM feel?

Balo rotors and Jurid or Pagid pads. Still my favorite combination for the street, too. I'd rather deal with the dust and have great brakes with solid feel every time I need them, and they're quiet. About the only thing that feels better on the street is Hawk HP+ pads, but they squeal like a garbage truck (louder than any full-on race pad I've used), and it seems like they dust as much stock. And they're more expensive and rougher on rotors, to boot.

Ceramic pads (Hawk or Akebono Euros) are quiet and produce a lighter dust that washes away much more easily, but I have tried them on 3 different cars and I just don't like the vague feel. I have a set of Pagids and a set of Hawk HP+ waiting in the wings as soon as I can use up my current Hawk Performance Ceramics. That said--the ceramics are great on my mom's car, and I'm putting a set on my GF's car as well, because they don't wash their cars often enough and the Pagid dust will eventually permanently damage the wheels if you leave it for 3 months.

So, in short: wash and wax your wheels, put on Pagids (or Jurids) and Balos, wash your car at least once a month, and enjoy the best stopping/noise combination you can get at street speeds.

Nice response! thanks Tammer. So is 130.00 shipped for rear balo rotors, Jurid rear pads, new rotor bolts, and a wear sensor a good deal?

My PBR Metalmaster + cheapo Opparts rotors feels like OEM stuff in every possible way. And yes, I have had the whole shebang from the dealer on one of my e34s before (courtesy of PO w/ way too much money).

Tammer is dead on.. However, remember that most of the bite will come from the fronts, so I would go with hawk performace ceramic in the rear..

Price seems fair to me. What is that, $45/rotor and $40 for the pads and other bits?

Hey guys didn't want to make a new thread about brakes, are the PBR Axxis ultimates good for DD/occasional auto-x or the would metal masters be better?

Do you know if Textar [sp?] was an OEM supplier for the E34 during the early 90's as well?

I used the PBR ultimates on my DD Saab, and they were okay. Not great, but not horrid. My biggest complaint was that they were kind of crappy in the rain. They should be okay for autocross, but they aren't very aggressive.

Pagid, Textar, and Jurid all have supplied OE brake pads for BMW.

Thanks: Of the three -- any differences in quality or composition? Or will they all be made supposedly to same specs? Thanks.

I've never run Textar pads myself, but I've never noticed much difference between Pagid and Jurid stock-replacement pads in the same application. I think my mom's E39 came with Textars, and they seemed fine for the very brief time I drove them before I did a brake job on her car.

So how would you compare the PBR ultimates to Pagid?

As I said in my first post, I prefer the Pagid and that's what I use on my BMWs for street driving. The PBRs don't engage as linearly and, IMO, their max stopping power is lower. It's the typical tradeoff for less dust ... you give up some initial bite and some all-out friction. However, they certainly aren't bad, except I found them much less grabby in heavy rain. They are pretty cheap and wear well, which is nice.
