View Full Version : How to make Borla exhaust sound better?

I have a CAI and Borla Exhaust on a E36 M.
I'm not happy with the sound of the Borla.
It has too much "hum" and not enough gurgle, pop, or rawness.
What other mods can I do which will contribute to better sound?
I believe I only have the muffler..and not the full exhaust.

i love my borla....if i need a fix for that raw sound, i just drop my cat-back for a few days...

I love the "humm" instead of the "gurgle". My factory exhaust "gurgle's" too much for my taste. Lets trade :buttrock

get a track pipe to eliminate your cats, or buy a UUC.

You need System U or B&B Tri-Flo.
You can't 'make' your Borla change sounds... minus drilling holes in it or something overly drastic.

Can he remove the resonators or do high flow cats, headers?

You could but it is not going to change the natural tone to the car.

Exchange it for an M3 exhaust

Get high flow cats, Gut them(if you want to fight emissions), or get a track pipe. However, you still don't have the ideal muffler for that sound. It makes more sense, if you want a good sound, to get a muffler from companies like stromung or uuc that were designed specifically for your car rather then made by a big exhaust company that just cut and re-wielded a standard "sport" muffler to fit a bolt pattern.
..if i need a fix for that raw sound, i just drop my cat-back for a few days...
That works everytime, but like you said only for a few days.

Be sure and send this link to the guy that said a Borla will "scare small children."

How old is the borla?
It will get louder, poppier, and raspier as it ages.

to fix it you buy a B&B tri-flow exhaust ;) i have one on mine, it pops, gurgles, and humms. its loud when you want it to be loud but isnt annoying to drive every day. every time i downshift or let off the throttle it pops and crackles a lot. i love it.

Where can i pick up a stromung
How can I tell if my borla has a resonator (or two?)
Blah the Stromung soundclips dont sound any better than my Borla.
