View Full Version : So I've searched. Electric fans?

I've done a search, but no one has ever really finished in the threads I was reading. I was thinking of ditching the fan clutch, and fan since I am scared it's going to destroy my hood now and wanted to convert to electric. Anyways, does anyone happen to know what size the fan is? It would be kind of nice to get a fan the would fit in the stock shroud. I'd like to wire a thermo somewhere, and do this right. Any suggestions. Will a stock AUX fan have enough pulling power to pull full time duty? Thanks in advance.

I wouldn't trust the aux only on a BMW cooling system or an M60 or in a hot state or in a city, etc etc.
And in june or july, maybe even fall of 2007 one of these conversions was being done. I remember shrike and mr proj. I think shrike was posting in proj's thread. Did you find that one?

no i didn't. Hmmm. But it wouldn't be just the AUX fan. I would have the stock one as the "aux fan" and then I would take the aux fan out of another e34 and wire it in with a thermo and stuff. I was just wondering what people thought of it.

depends on where you live, and how much time you spend idling with the a/c on in traffic.
Here, absolutely not.
Maine, probably.

I've been running dual Spal fans that come in a shroud and they fit just about perfectly on the radiator for our M60's. Each fan was hooked up to an adjustable relay to come on at slightly different times to not draw full start-up amperage.
I'm going back to a mechanical fan for a few reasons.... It's actually faster for me to pull off the fan clutch/fan then it is to take off the electric fan when I need to get in there and work on something. And I haven't had the patience/time to get the wiring exactly how I want and the wiring currently isnt hooked up and I cant hang with running the heater to keep the car from overheating in stop/go traffic any more. (The aux fan has never worked in this car,I'm sure it would help some.)
I would say just get brand new fan blades if youre paranoid and run that, seems the failures were mostly from old brittle plastic.
Butttt....If youre interested in an electric set up still I'd sell ya mine.:)

:eyecrazy^...Pretty easy upgrade to do as Mr. Project has done and schneller has the same setup as well. You just need to get an electrical fan with the proper cfm (which in your cause would be a puller fan, since you want to pull air through the radiator and the AUX fan is a pusher). You also need a wiring kit either adjustable or pre-set that the fan is hooked up to and knows when to turn on and off. The rest is just figuring out the wiring which most guys tap into the wiring of the radiator thermostat (which is the AUX fan switch). Mr. Projects DIY looks great and heres one from the BMW E34 website: http://www.bmwe34.net/Wiki/tiki-index.php?page=Electrical+fan
I plan on removing my fan clutch and fan as well and ordering an electrical fan and wiring kit from summitracing. I dont understand why guys do the fan delete and run nothing as every component on a car is engineered and designed for a purpose, and by eliminating such component they will run the risk of failures and quality of certain parts shortening life span over time...just my 2cents :eyecrazy

I would like to do this also. I dunno why people sound so scared that the fan will fail. there are countless cars out there with electrical fans that most times outlast the cars they are in.

I set about this, i gathered up some electric fans from scrap cars, but as yet not done anythng, not so much of an issue on a cool running diesel.

I blew up 2 mechanical fans on my 530i
1st one popped the rad and I was able to solder it, put the shroud back together with about 20 zip ties.
2nd time not so lucky, I heard it one blade let go and I was like "not again, well F this and kept it pinned" the rest of the blades let go, demolished the rigged shroud, intake tube, upper hose, radiator, torn hood liner and a few dents in the hood.
My advice: Don't rev it out until fully warmed up.
and don't buy a 530ia

Not on a 540 in Florida. I could run 30 minute sessions at Sebring on just the aux fan (jumped to run constantly) but as soon as the car got down below 10mph it would start creeping up... stopped idling... fugetaboudit

What if someone made a metal fan instead, like the older SBCs? You could probably form some aluminum pretty easily, then use some industrial-grade epoxies to link the formed blades to a center ring.
Or, for the ultimate in weight savings, a carbon fiber fan!

i run a 71 or 75c t-stat, stewart warner pump, and a 16" spal electric fan in front of my 4" thick intercooler and have no issues.
