My car makes a clicking or rattling sound when i am stopped at a stop sign or traffic light with my foot on the brake. Once i take my foot off the noise stops. It also happens sometimes when the car is rolling but no gas or brake is being applied.

What are some possible problems i could be having?

thats what im guessing. i thought my car was making wierd noises untill i heard my old mechanic's M3. run 20-50 oil, that should help quiet it down if its really bothering you. but honestly its just a BMW engine, they're noisey by design :cool

Is it possible your exhaust is rattling? Just a thought. It happens when the hangers get worn out. Sounds like the symptoms.

i like the exhaust theory, that happened with my car. put the car in park, get out and walk around to the exhaust and see if its hitting off the fender or somewhere near the hangers. dont breathe a lot though haha

or your fuel purge valve? when its running at idle the purging vibrates off the inner fender and sounds like a valve tick. its only at idle and if you slowly rev up the engine and listen for it, it will go away unlike a valve tick which increases with rpms. all of the other suggested problems could be the issue too but its just another think to look at... turn off your engine when you hear the sound again but only turn it 1 click so everything but the engine tays on..if you still hear the tick its your fuel purge valve and its located under your air filter box

Wow, I have that exact problem, I'm relieved it's not an engine issue.

its a common issue, theres a diy to fix it..just need to take a little rubber piece off your stock air box and fit it between your purge valve and the mount...i already had a cold air intake so i just took the rubber thing off the old air box and didnt have to order a new one. if you do i think they're only like a couple bucks

I've got a CAI too, and the old box is laying around so I'm set.
