i'm taking off the exhaust for a new tranny install.

i'm having REAL trouble removing the exhaust. the nuts that hold the manifold and the midpipe came off but one. i COMPLETLY stripped the last one and i bought a dremel. i'm trying to cut it up but its not working

but i cant get the manifold studs pulled away from the midpipe. are there studs on the manifold end? or is it an actual bolt that i just snapped the head off of? i'm FCKED and pissed i cant get the last bolt:mad

oh wait.. so its a stud like that. i have no nut on the manifold side, it just screws in? do i have to back to out to get the midpipe off

dremel was the wrong choice. Get yourself a real 4.5" grinder with a cutoff wheel. They are studs, so you'll have to get lucky finding a bolt to bolt it back up. It was a PITA on my end as well ;)

OBDI studs are very difficult to get out and you should have really tried to preserve the studs and threads themselves. OBDII headers have press fit studs that can eaily be pounded out and restudded or new bolts and nuts can be installed. Your best bet is to pull the headers off the engine, with the midpipe attached, and workyour magic from there. New bolts or studs are the remedy for sure.

great 60 bucks down the fcking drain.
i dont have enough room to fit the dremel really. and i dont know what angle i should cut it.

my remedy was going to be.

1. try somehow to get the last bolt out.
2. pull the exhaust down
3. put the tranny and all that shit in
4. buy Ebay headers and put them in
5. bring the car with an open manifold to an exhaust shopw and have the re-weld everything

hah

thanks for the awsome fast responses

Whoa whoa whoa, dont drive that car with no headers, youll destroy your valves.

Just drop the exhaust, by the headers, and then remove the midpipes from it. If you want ebay headers, more power to you, but dont half-ass this or make too much work for yourself, ive been in this same situation with another ti swappers build.

whats the best way to pull down the midpipes? back the studs out?

and any other suggestions for the shitty stuck bolt

If you have the nuts all removed, hammer, pry, and wiggle them off, otherwise, you need to remove or loosen the headers anyways to take the pressure off the joined area.

You''ll find uses for the dremel, don't worry. It WOULD work for your situation if you can get it in there, but it'll take forever. Then again, I forgot how little room there is down there, and a 4.5" grinder probably wouldn't fit. GL, don't really have any more suggestions than you've already got.

They relly cant be screwed out once in and have rust on them.

hell ya. with that stripped stud it kept one half of the manifold on (you can see it in pic 2) which made it a COMPLETE WHORE to pull out from underneath.

lets just say it came out with 3 jacks and my car being about 10 ft in the air. ha

catalyst.

wow so you just couldnt get the studs out.. how hard was it to pull the headers??

T325i

to pull them off the block?? EASY. the studs usually come off with the bolts. if all the studs are off the manifold just pretty much falls off. if you leave studs behind its a bit tougher.

to pull them from under the car still attached? rough. like i said. the bolts came off the manifold like cake too.
