Quick specs
1987 325i Convertible, Delphin Metallic with Pearl Beige interior. Beige Top.
Approx. 189,000 miles. Limited Slip Differential.

The Good:
Lots of recent maintenance
New Clutch- Last week
New brake pads and disks- 9 months ago
New Water Pump under my ownership
New Interior under my Uncle's ownership. No tears in the rear seat tops like most convertibles.
New top under my uncle's ownership. It has two dime sized holes from rubbing on the supports during closure. Does not let water in for some odd reason.
New exhaust 9 months ago.
Interior is nicest of any e28/e30/e34 I have owned (6 total).
Mechanically very very sound. Nothing should be needed for quite some time.
This vert seems to have a dealer installed appearance package. Has the normal 87 325is front airdam and rear spoiler. It also has a limited slip differential, which is great for any e30, or any BMW for that matter.

The Normal:
Cracks in the dash, one and a half cracks along the passenger side.
A couple dings and dents along the front end.

The Bad:
Rust on the rear driver side arch. Small portion on tip of hood from rock chips.
Fog lights came up when I flexed the front airdam in a small berm. I also placed a dent in the front right fender at the same time.
Rear spoiler must have gotten water into it, as it seems to have expanded and hardened in a 6inch portion.
Odo stopped working at about 187,000. This happened last Oct. Car was in storage in my neighbors garage from beginning of November until March. Has been driven sparingly since then due to slipping clutch and a new Acura TSX. I would say that at most 4000 miles have been put on the car since it stopped.
A crack has developed in the rear windshield. I'm not sure how in the world it happened, since the car was stored in my garage when it did. My best guess is that possibly the cold temps over the winter did something, but I really have no idea.
Car needs emission/inspection, but it was at my mechanic right before it ran out and he looked over everything to make sure it would pass. I may take car of this before it sells, since its only $40 and I am sure it will pass.

Brief History
Car was bought by a yuppie in PA from a dealership. Was owned by him until about 100,000 miles. He sold it do a used car dealership in PA. Eventually my Uncle came across at it another car dealer in NJ and bought it in 2000 ( I have maint records going back to that point). I bought the car from my Uncle about 3 years ago. THe car was serviced by my Uncle in NJ by a shop called Bimmers Only and Herb chambers BMW. It was serviced in my area by two shops, B & W Auto and by Bob Fox, who works mostly on Porsches but also does MB and BMW.

Quick History of Maint (back to 2000, before may be available from BMW dealer records).
2000 - Control arms, control arm bushings. Flex disk, timing belt, waterpump, pulleys, can and crank seals, drive belts.
2001- Front struts and housing, Radiator, thermostat.
2004- New convertible top ($1300), reupholster seats
2003- Rear brake pads+ rotors.
2005- Headlights, foglights.
2006- (My ownership) Waterpump, belts. Various fluids filters.
2007 - Exhaust, brake pads. Fluids
Sept 2008- Clutch, resurface flywheel. Fluids. New battery.

Not mentioned in this list is the various regular tune ups, oil changes etc. Have a folder with receipts from 2000 on.

Car has not been driven much in the last year. Was stored while I was at school and taken out in April, given a once over with new oil and filter and a new battery. The clutch began to slip right before it went into winter storage, and it has made only short distance trips since it came out. I have put 100 miles on the new clutch and the car drives great.

Reason for selling. Want a motorcycle, sick of paying insurance on two cars, stupid tickets for non-moving violations (light bulb out, old registration sticker despite current registration), going back to school, etc etc.
I want to sell this and my 535is and consolidate my holdings into a new e30. If your interested in a 1988 535is alpine over cardinal let me know.

I'm looking to get $2800 for it. I have put nearly that much into it in the last year alone. I would love to trade + cash for a nice plastic bumpered e30 325is or 325i coupe. OR, if you have a Ninja 250r, that would also be of interest.

PLEASE CONTACT ME AT jhaffel@gmail.com. I prefer to use email rather than telephone.

All of the Maint from 2000, I've got a binder with everything, even most of the oil changes.

Anyone have interest in a trade for a motorcycle. I would prefer a Ninja 250, or something else good for a beginner and not to far off in price.

Anyone want to do a partial trade for some e28 parts? If you have a set of style 5s+tires, that could knock the price down quite a bit. I could also be interested in an "is" airdam, euro bumper setup, or shocks and springs. I know someone has a garage full of this stuff, and may want to get rid of it for a nice convertible for spring.

thinking of putting this car up on eBay and seeing how that goes, Let me know if you have any interest before I do that, as I'd rather not have to sign up and deal with back-out bidders and all of the other headaches I foresee.

Very thorough write-up and impressive repair history; thank you for the detail; I have limited familiarity with that model ...please advise; "limited slip differential" is that technically a manual shift or automatic? would the car be available this weekend to see?..thanks..Mike T

I have not reviewed the fine print of bimmerforum rules..if possible can you email me directly at pmtabacco@earthlink.net ..thanks again..Mike T

The car is a manual. It has 5 speeds and you shift yourself using the shifter and the clutch.

A limited slip differntial is a certain kind of differential. The differential is at the rear of the car and transmits the torque coming from the engine in each direction to both wheels. An 'open' differential works in a way that if one wheel were on ice, and the other on pavement, all of the power would simply spin the wheel on ice. The other wheel would be at a stand still. Most cars have this type of 'diff' . A limited slip differential insures that power will go through both wheels even if one were to be on ice. It would 'limit' the difference in speed between the two wheels using gears (or clutches) inside the diff. This is often found on performance cars, as it helps put down power to the ground while turning and accelerating. It also helps in the rain, snow, ice and other conditions where the road could spin the wheels. With both wheels spinning it is easier to keep going where you want.
So for a car like the e30 325i here, it helps with both the performance and 'feel', along with the driveability and safety in adverse conditions.
Limited Slip diffs came on all 325is models, and could be optioned on other e30 3 series as well. This car has one, along with the rest of the parts that a 325is would have except the suspension, since it is a convertible.

If it were a coupe I'd have a much tougher time deciding to sell.

I'm just not a top-down kind of person. However, it is pretty awesome to drop the lid on a crisp fall evening, throw on a sweater, and cruise down my favorite streets into the city. The views of the city are great when you can just look all around at the tall buildings and lights as you drive. Much different than a coupe.

IMO evenings are the best time for convertible driving. The only thing worse than driving in a hot day is driving in high temps with the sun baking you from above. While some may like to work on their tans, driving through twisty back roads with the top down at night really reminds me why I own a 'vert.
