Hey all! Cool site, I just found it so if this has already been discussed please forgive me.
I want to remove my front license plate and put in a bumper strip, but I think in NY you need to have both front and rear plates. So my question is, anyone here driving with only a rear plate in states where it's illeagal? Have the cops busted you for it? If so what is the penalty? Finally anyone have a good solution to this other than to keep the front plate on? Thanks.

I run without a front plate (NJ) and I have a middle eastern plate on instead.

I own the plate that's on it too...so if Mr. Officer really want's to look it up in Beirut he'll find my '95 Mitsubishi Montero registered to it.

I haven't had anything but stares at my car since I've had it on. I have been pulled over by a cop once in Newark cause he wanted to know where he could get one (he's egyptian).

Good stuff, but I haven't had a real hassel, just some discrimination that's all.

I got pulled over once in Northern NJ (Bergen County) by what seemed to be a rookie cop from the next town over from me. $45 bucks down the drain.

I didn't have one on my GTP and I got a warning for it. Secondary offense, though, primary was speeding. I'm convinced he wouldn't have pulled me over for speeding (I wasn't really going faster than anyone else) if I had my front plate there. Anyway, I got the M3 from Wisconsin where I guess they don't have a front plate law so it came without the mounting bracket for the license plate. I drove around for a while like that but I just felt nervous. So I mounted the plate on after a few months. Anyway, back in April, I got pulled over again and the first thing he did was go to the front of the car and check if the plate was there. Thank goodness. If you're lucky go for it. I seem to attract police far too much for comfort, though.

ive gotten ticket for no front plates before.... and its just a fine, its not a moving violation so the ticket is not gonna go on your record....

what you might try is to put the plate between the dash and windshield.... that might keep you away from a ticket.... or keep the plate under your seat and throw it up on your dash if you get pulled over or something...

With an ACS body kit there is no allowance for a front plate. I don't really care too much about it anyway.

Some times, I think it's way cool to not have a front plate.

Last fall I got a $70.00 ticket for no front plate. I was exiting Knauz BMW in Lake Bluff, IL and a Lake Bluff police officer nailed me. I followed the officer to this tiny Police HQ in town to pay the $70.00 and get my drivers license back from him.

Oh well, easy come easy go!

I have since been stopped several times by the Illinois State Police and I have yet to get a ticket from them. Bahaha

Here's why;

My buddy in the parts dept at Knauz BMW, creates a computer generated invoice/parts on order document for me with all the part numbers and descriptions of the front license plate bracket and the buffer strip, etc.

He includes a notation about an out of stock back order, awaiting shipment from Germany in about 45-60 days.

He stamps it with a big red ink PARTS ON ORDER stamp.

I get a fresh document with the date updated with a current date about every 60 days or so.

When I am stopped for no front plate, I jus pull out my parts on order document and hand it over to the officer, who usually eyeballs it like some forensic auditor, looks at me and then hands it back and says, "have a nice day."

"You have a nice day too officer" and I'm otta there.

Last winter I got stopped by a female Illinois State trooper, btw I also have tinted windows, so the first thing I do is roll down both front windows asap before the officer approaches.

The usual drill with the parts on order document, "have a nice day, you too officer".

She pulls out behind me and paced me for about 9 miles, it was friggen cold with both front windows rolled down, going 55 mph.

Yessssssssssss.........I'm havin fun on the road, livin on the edge with the Illinois State Police.

Haha, my friend gets harassed like that too, usually tells the cop that he's got the windows down in the middle of winter because he just finished lifting.

No front in DC, but I have been warned once already.

I just think they are ugly and ruin the line of the front end of the car.

Chris,

You sure she just wasn't checking you out? Maybe she wanted your phone # for a date.

Sorry, I forgot to tell you how to get out of it. Keep the plate in the car and when the officer asks, say you were hit by some one backing into you and the new mounting brackets haven't come in. I live in the wood so I say I hit a deer (common) and the brackets haven't come in. Several times I have been asked to get it, and when they see it they say just put it on. This has worked for my father and I for 8+ years. The cop who gave me the ticket pulled me over for speeding a week before and didn't give me a ticket, so I wasn't too mad.

i've tried all the excuses and finally after 4 tickets i decided to get custom plates so at least it something interesting to look at.

no front, no hassle 8 months and going...
but I keep the plate in my car and there are so many dealers that I could simply wip the plate out and say I'm actually going to the dealer to pick up my bracket...it fits perfectly in the glove box.

No front plate, it is one of my favorite mods so far, next to my CAI, and I just leave the other plate in my passanger seat, if pulled over, or anytime I park I just huck him up on the dash, I believe that is perfectally legal, and meets all the requiriments.

This is my second M3 and I own a saleen and none of them have had front plates. I'm sure there are some cops out there that would give me a ticket for it, but I've never had any problem so far, and I've been pulled over and ticketed a couple of times for other things. They never mentioned the front plates.
