sounds to me like the iso loom has a fault. take out your radio and check for damaged wires. i had a similar problem but it was down to this.
when i got my car i installed an aftermarket headunit. i discovered upon removing the installed cassette deck thet someone had in fact changed it once before. the loom on the installed radio was bodged together with what i call snip clips. (little connectors that you clip together and they cut into the wire to make a connection). there were several crossed and damaged wires that i had to sort out.
so you should first check the cabeling behind the headunit.
second check the conections at the speakers.
and no there are no external amps in the trunk that come as standard as far as i know.

hmm i call those little clips splicers.. to each his own i guess. thats a good point to check above is the back of the head unit. maybe time to upgrade to a new one and some speakers from bavarian soundwerkes?
