Here is what makes me think its a vacuum leak
---'97 540i auto

1. Power seems to be decreased running off the line.

2. RPM's arent moving as fast as they once where

3. MPG gauge at bottom of RPM gauge seems to dip low as I come to a stop and doesnt go all the way back to "40" as I let off gas
This gauge is connected with vacuum IIRC

Does this sound like a vacuum leak problem?

Those are good symtems of a vac leak---check your hoses and try to listen for the tale tale hissss of air and try to find where the leaks are---makes a dif in power and fuel mileage.

Smoke test is the best.

Yea saw about a 1.2 drop in MPG but that could also be contributed to colder weather (denser air in intake)

How much should a vacuum leak run me, cheap right?:conf:az

Anything else this could be?
