Your choice, I tend to want good quality OEM hardware but look for the bargain if it makes sense. No expensive "mods" or "performance" upgrades.

Here's what I did with my 328is: http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1073044 (http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum/showthread.php?p=14004215)

Have they failed yet?

Who told you to do these?

How many miles?

the key with preventative maintenance is to do it before it fails. and IIRC OP just got his car not too long ago so he may not have a clue as to when the cooling was last refreshed

They don't make the plastic impeller water pump any more, because it sucks. Just match up the one for your model and year. :)

You can get the FDM at Understeer.com. I recommend the FRM, though. Don't remove (delete) the fan, replace it was a Spal.

You have a 318 and they don't fail typically until 150K miles. I would do the t-stat but not the water pump. They are not the same as the 6 cylinder and not prone to failure like those of us with the E36 6.

You car your choice but it is not needed and not PM for this model. However fluid changes are so if you are not doing those please do so so that you do not suffer a premature failure of the water pump or sticking calipers etc...
