My 1997 528i started to burn antifreeze out the exhaust (you could see the fog) and it would overheat, and you could tell the antifreeze level was going down.
Ok headgasket. We tore it down, cylinder 5 and 6 was clearly clean so it was getting into there.
I took the head to a machine shop and had them check it for warpage. They said it looked good. I did not take the valves or cams out, so they did not check any further.
We figured the thermostat had failed at some point, and the engine got hot and strechted the head bolts, and that was why it was leaking (the head gasket was fine). So we put new head gasket on it, new head bolts, etc. Everything seems good. Then it started to rumble a little on start up, and I can see it is sucking a little antifreeze (the level goes down after i drive it). It hasnt gotten to the point where it has overheated yet, ive got 200 miles on it since the rebuild.
Ive been told the aluminum head would warp before the block....do you think i should just get a remanufactured head?
Is there any checks i can do to see if it is the head, and not something else?
Where would you reccommend getting a remanufactured head, or should i send mine off to get remanufactured...
