Possible Transmission growl

Noise which sounds somewhat like a growl and a very slight shudder when car is shifts from second to third gear. This is an Automatic. 1999 528I. Drives smoothly thereafter. Doesn't seem jerky when it downshifts. Any suggestions? Miles: 147,000

I am new to BMW's I'll admit, but I'm not new to transmission failures. You could try a fluid and filter change and hope for the best; but me? I would be thinking the worst.

You don't explain what service you have done on the car's transmission (if any), but I'd bet you are on the way to a new one. Automatics are nice (especially in traffic), but they don't last forever. Good luck!
