I have a 2002 540i. On my way home from work my over heating warning popped up below my speedo and my temp gauge was in the red. I pulled over and looked underneath the car and sure enough I was losing anti-freeze like a faucet. Long story short, I didn't have a chance to take the car apart yet but it looks like there's a puddle below the expansion tank? Ever hear of these cracking? Or maybe it's the bottom hose on the tank? Any suggestions?

Lol.

How long was the thing in the red. Hope the engine isnt cooked.

BTW I lol'd because you seem oblivious to the cooling system. How many miles?

Hmmm, probably about 5 minutes. I hope the engine isn't cooked either. I know there are numerous problems with the E39 cooling system. Radiator, thermostat, etc.... but expansion tank? Wft?!?! The car has 88,xxx miles on it and the radiator probably has 20,xxx on it. I know it's not the radiator and if it was I'd just buy the Zionsville one and get it over with. I REALLY hope I didn't do any damage to the engine. :(

Just replaced mine this weekend, fairly simple. Two lower coolant hoses (quick connect), the temp sensor, upper over flow hose and a couple connection clips on the shroud. Took me about a half an hour. Whatever coolant that is in expansion tank will end up on drive way unless it's empty.

My tank cost $62 at Pelican parts (2003 525i). Hope this helps.

Thanks bro. Just got in from 25 degree weather (sweet) but I got the tank out and it DOES have a 3 inch hair line crack across the middle of it. No other signs of any other damage so everything looks a ok :alright:buttrock:D

Man, thats funny! 208 posts and you didn't know that the expansion tanks pop like they're made of over stressed plastic? Oh yeah, they are made of over stressed plastic!

Hahaha yeah, I'm an e30 guy. I just bought my 540i this past June so I'm getting used to it, great car other than the cooling system! Thanks for the heads up :stickoutt

Mine cracked the same way at 80k. Don't know how many other tanks have been replaced on my car before I owned it. :cool
