Check Engine Light question.

I have sometimes a check engine light but it goes off immediately after i shift it in higher gear or when i release the gas pedal. It happen when the car is warmed up and between 2000-3200 RPM. I tried the pedal trick but it don't work for me,somebody told me i might have a bad throttle position sensor and because of that i could not do the trick. Does exist any other way to pull out the codes except the pedal trick and the OBD I tool, like connect 2 pins on the diagnostic port under the hood!

I would appreciate any help because i cannot afford anymore expensive stuff for my car like scanners or to take it to stealership ,i lost my job:(:bluecryin and i have family.
