I've got a post on 318ti.org but I figured I should probably post here as well.

Note: Car has been located

Wednesday morning I arrived at school and parked my car around 9:00am. I wasn't parked next to a meter, but I wasn't blocking anything and I thought worst case, I'd get a ticket. I'm in school all day till about 8pm. I get out, walk to where I parked my car and it's gone. I'm thinking the school probably towed it (there's construction going on in that area - again, it didn't seem like I was impeding anything, but I though perhaps somehow I was).

I call the school on Thursday, and they tell me that not only have they not towed any cars recently, but they only tow cars from inside of school lots. . .and after leaving tickets on the cars over a couple days. Since I was parked on the street, they said likely my car was towed by the city.

So I call the city of Pittsburgh pound. They look up my car, and say they haven't towed it. Not only that, but they don't even have any BMWs in the lot. Given that all four wheels have bmw badges, plus I've got the hood and trunk emblem, I have a hard time believing that someone could have misfiled my car as a make other than a bmw.

So, that leaves one conclusion. I'm still having a hard time believing it because I typically lock my car when I walk away. If I forget to do so, I usually realize it before I'm more than several feet away and just hit the lock button on the alarm until it chirps. Plus all my spare keys are distributed among friends in case I accidentally lock my primary key in the car. And my primary key, which is in my possession, is the only one with a chip that matches the 328 DME in the car.

As far as I can figure, to otherwise steal my car would require a lot of work - opening the hood, swapping DMEs and EWSs, breaking the steering lock and all this would happen in broad daylight on a busy street (I was parked next to the engineering building and a teacher's college - that street always has people walking up and down).

But yet, my car is clearly not where I parked it. Even more strange, Friday I went by again to look (in case my mind was somehow addled Wednesday night) and I saw the same SUV I parked in front of on Wednesday roughly in the same spot. Anyway, I've filed a police report and gone through filing a claim with my insurance company. I guess now it's just wait and hope it turns up soon in one piece.

Ouch, that really sucks man. That really does sound like a lot of work to steal it...maybe the thieves towed your car? I've heard stories of hardcore thieves using tow trucks to steal ITRs.

Dang man that really sucks:(... is it a manual, cause they could have just put it in neutral and pushed it even though someone driving by should have suspected something...if you find out how stole if all of BF.C should show up at their door and give them a good ass kicking... i hope you get your car back.

You don't have a finance company that might have legally (or illegally or by mistake) repossessed the car do you? I'm just thinking of ways you might cover your bases.

Yeah I was thinking the same thing. since its a zone where you could possibly get towed, they used the perfect cover and tow it themselves (the thieves)

sux to hear this, hopefully you get it back in 1 piece or the full amount from your insurance.

I will keep an eye on it, pretty easy to spot, 1 black taillight and 1 regular one ;)

Good luck man. It looks nice with the rims, they probably figured it wasn't stock and could make some money.

+1 on the thieves towing it. No one would give a second look to a roll back or tow truck hauling off a car. I know in the last town I lived in it was quite a regular thing. They would pull up in walmart with a rollback, pull the car up on it and leave. No one ever paid attention, everyone just assumes the vehicle is broke down and the owner is having it towed for repairs.

Sorry to hear that man. Good luck with finding it.

I had a friend here at school in Philadelphia do the same thing. Parked, no meters, no signs around...goes out after our night class and his car is missing. Calls the police, they take down the vin. Calls all of the junkyards, no one knows of it. A month after its been missing (and has already bought another car) the tow company calls him and asks why he hasn't come and get is car and they want like $1000 to get it out.

Turns out the cops wrote down the VIN wrong the first time. So after a few days make sure they wrote it down correctly, and call up some of the local tow companies. GL.

I have good news. After the police got on it, they determined that the University did have it towed after all (despite what they told me). Today I picked up my car, minus $300 for the towing and "storage" fees.

I had a car stolen in Seattle about 5 years ago. Found out they pulled it out of a tight parallel parked spot with chains and put it on a flat bed. The evidence was clear by looking at the front end. Nothing but a frame left when I saw it last. Paid $200 in towing and $50 for them to keep the car there. I asked what they are going to do with it. I was told they would eventually auction it off and make about $50 for it. I asked who would by a frame? I was told the same guys who stole it will have another crew buy it back. They they will put it back together with extras. Resale it and even use my old plates because they have good tabs. Plates stay with the car and owner. I was told the Russians have that area on lock.
I had liability and ended up losing my car $250 and 6 months left that I paid on my insurance lost.

The meaning of my story...The Russians probley did it???

I hope you wrote down the name of the person who works for the University who originally told you that they didn't have your car, because you shouldn't have to pay for any storage past that point. If they charge you for storage after being told they don't have your car, you probably have a legal challenge.

Does your University have a law school or legal department? They love to get involved with this type of case.

Good luck.
