Hey guys so today I changed another fuel line with better hose I and fuel got everywhere again and I was wondering if the fuel could have messed up something temporarily with the temperature (thermostat?). After I changed it I went and drove about 3 miles to pick up my sister and while I was waiting for her to come outside I look at the temp gauge and it's at the 3/4 mark, I instantly turn the car off, check for spewing coolant or anything, nothing, I go put the key in the position where all the gauges activate, the temp is a little more than 3/4 now, but it is noticeably moving down. It went back down to 1/2, where it usually is and stayed there, so I decided to drive home, it drove perfectly normal and I checked for leaks again, there were none. What could have happened?

Fan clutch.

What about the fan clutch?

I mean like would getting it wet cause this?

Alright I searched and found out what the fan clutch is. I did the "test" and let it idle for a little over 10 min and it didn't get above the 1/2 mark. What now?

The proper way to test the fan clutch is to let it idle for 10-15 minutes after a good drive. Then, take a single sheet of newspaper and roll it up. Then force it towards the center of the fan clutch; not on the side of the radiator but the side of the engine. If the fan stops, the clutch is faulty.

Getting it wet would not cause this.

Hey man I would apreciate it if you could possibly post a pic of where to stick a paper, I don't wana go get my hand caught in the fan or anything haha.

And also I don't think it's too good an idea to let it idle for 15 min, I drove it around the block a few times and let it idle for about 5 min and it started going up, but as soon as I start moving it rapidly cools.

Can someone explain to me why this happens please? (I know it's a bad fan clutch, but what is actually happening?)

Also if the fan clutch goes do you feel the power that the fan is usually using? I was pulling harder than normal today and it seemed to drive smoother :dunno

Well I put the newspaper in the fan... and it stopped. Was I supposed to put it somewhere else?

If it stops, your fan clutch is gone. What happens is when you're moving you have air flowing through the radiator. Once you stop, its the fan clutch's job to engage when the radiator gets hotter because of no air flow; thus it will lock up and force the fan to push air through the radiator. If its worn out, it won't lock up the fan and you won't have any air flow.

Thanks a lot man, makes a lot more sense now that I know what it does. I went out and bought a new fan clutch today (fucking $180) I know there are cheaper ones, but I didn't want to wait for it to be shipped, and if I paid for next day, it may not come when it supposed to and would only be a few $ cheaper.

I'm going to put it on within the next 2 days, but I had to use a punch on my fan bolt(what's it called?) last time because the wrenches were too fat, where could I find a wrench that fits it?

Go to a bike shop and ask for a 32mm headset wrench. Its very thin and durable. You may also need to make a tool to hold the water pump from spinning.

Tool on the left, wrench on the right.

Thanks man, so the clutch just bolts right on to the fan?

Yes with 3 allen head bolts.

next time the temp goes up more than 1/2 mark tap/hit the dash above the cluster to see if its a grounding issue

thanks dude, been really helpful lately :buttrock

I also noticed on the box of the new one it says this side up, does it really matter what side is up? I took it out of the box and don't know what part was on top

That's more for storing/shipping the fan clutches. You don't want them laying flat after they've been used or heat-cycled either. Something about the viscous fluid settling into the wrong area.

lmao

Okay guys, I feel really fucking stupid, today we tested my old fan clutch again in autoshop before putting the new one in and it was good, wow i'm happy we did that

turns out I was a little low on coolant, put some in, the problem appears to have gone away... why would low coolant make it heat up on idle though?

How low are we talking? You may have air in the system.

You couldn't see it if you looked in the top of the resevoir. It wasn't that low, my teacher said it wasn't that low either. But after driving home today from like a 7mile drive I let it sit idling for around 5-10 min and it was on the half mark, usually by then it would have gone up a noticeable amount, so I think that was all it needed but tomorrow I'll let it idle for a while after a long drive to check it again.
