I know this is maintenance 101... I've done my share of thermostats... but not on this motor. The how-to's mostly say remove the 4 bolts, r&r the thermostat, bolt back up & bleed. But seems like tight clearance between the housing & fan.. so looks to me either the hoses come off or the fan or.. am I making too much of it?

If you still have the plastic(brown) housing, order an aluminum one. Those can break and if you're going to take it off you may as well do it right. Also, get two new hoses while you're at it. But to answer the question, yes its that easy. Only trouble area you may run into is the bracket for an engine hoist.

i changed my water pump and thermo. on my 525 93, and if its anything like that engine the fan will have to come off. then its easy sailing.

If you remove the fan, you don't HAVE to remove the hoses, but removing them makes it ALOT easier. +10000 on the Al thermostat housing and new hoses. BTW I run without the motor fan with zero issues, just fyi.

just rember that if you pull the fan the threads are reverse.right to loosen left to tighten.take a piece of flat bar and drill a hole big enough for the 10mm bolt head on the fan pully bolt. drill the hole near the edge. put the flat bar with the hole drilled in it on one of the fan pully bolts and rotate the fan to where the flat bar hits one of the other bolts.that will keep the pully from turning when you remove the fan. rember reverse threads. then all you need is a 10 mm socket and a 13 mm socket. no big deal you can do it.:alright

Just a follow-up... limited value to the "pros"... but for the amateurs out there... I removed the shroud & plastic fan from the fan clutch... 3 allen bolts... very easy. Gave me the clearance to pull the housing away, to R&R the thermostat... without pulling hoses off. Thanks for the hand holding!

Sorry to hijack the thread, but I'm getting a coolant leak from my T-stat housing, so I was going to replace it with the Al housing. Should I remove the fan to do that, or not necessary since I have to remove the hoses anyway?

Is there any DIY threads for this?

Thanks
