View Full Version : Brake Light Circuit error keeps coming up.
My brake light circuit error keeps coming up on my onboard computer and its getting annoying after the first day now. I just checked if my break lights work and they do, and its not only when i press on the break I dont think but once i start the car up it act's up.
I have a 1996 328i 4 door.
Any suggestions?

I'm having the same issue..was told it's probably a relay switch...
My brother was saying the same thing but I always like to come on here to see.

It the brake light switch. Its a button that the pedal pushes on. Very comman problem. Go to any parts site and search for it. 18 dollar part.

This is like the most talked about error....come on guys...search.
Brake Light Failure -> one or both brakelight bulbs are out
Brake Light Circuit -> brakelights are Just Fine. It's the brakelight switch at the brake pedal that needs replacing.
All nicely explained in the owner's manual. You wonder how people loose these things in the 1st place.

Yeah, you're absolutely right Mparallel, there are a lot of similar posts on this forum... I , for instance, can't find anywhere where there is a post on a brake light failure after a stereo was stolen(ripped out) of my dash and now the damn things come on after 5 miles of driving requiring a disconnection from the battery. That being said, be helpful if you're going to post. I think all of us would find it helpful if you replaced those rims. They look like a south-of-the-border honda...does your car have those little dingle balls lining the ceiling too? Oh, and when you lose something you spell it this way L O S E and when you're a nut, you loosen it which is spelled this way L O O S E.
Dono, good luck with your problem! Hopefully it is much simpler than mine... well, hopefully mine turns out not to be so bad.

it's not just the bulbs. it can be the rear wiring harness, a faulty ground, or more commonly, the contact areab for the bulb socket is dirty. but yes, in this case the OP needs to replace the brake light switch. it is the 4 pin switch, not the 2 pin(that is for the 4 cylinder cars)

yea... it peeves me off when people just tell others to search instead of actually helping them, when sometimes there are unique problems(even if the obvious problem is a common one!)

You should consider lookng at the brake circuit and use a volt meter to test to continuity of the circuit.
