I have a 94 325is. Recently, it started leaking a light blue fluid from the rear of the car. I thought it was coming from the exhaust, but it's dripping from an unknown place next to the exhaust.

The fluid has no smell, is watery (not oily) and looks green on the cement, but light blue (like washer fluid) when it drips into my hand. This car has no rear washer on it so it's mysterious as to why it's leaking from the rear.

It has about 160,000 miles on it. I have maintenance done to it when needed. For the most part, it seems to run fine.

Any ideas?

The car also makes a grumbling noise when I start it. It lasts for a few seconds and fades away. It's been doing this for a long time and I've never known what it is.

I know... it's odd. Which is why I found this board. I figured somebody would know what the heck is going on!

If you are leaking SOMETHING will be low. A brake fluid leak will give a soft peddle. Check, and watch your fluids. It will show up.

Some brake fluid is blue. ATE makes some as I recall.

It has to be coming from somewhere. Keep looking and you will find it.

would the differential be a possibility?

Blue:
Brake fluid, coolant. Unless you use the green stuff. Check both. Diff fluid is yellowish, IIRC, and I haven't seen blue diff fluid. I would say check your power steering but that's usually a reddish color.

Have you checked your spare tire well in the trunk yet? Maybe you have a bottle of something in there that either got crushed and is leaking, froze and busted open and is slowly thawing and leaking........

Could be gremlin blood.

Let's hope he's dead. You know they only get more hostile when wounded :paranoid:

You are going to be far better served by taking the car in for service than hoping for people who cant see, smell or touch what is leaking. Ignoring fluid leaks and grumbling noises is a pretty sure recipe for a big repair bill later.
Blue and not oily tells me it's washer fluid. Coolant and brake fluid are both oily feeling. Engine oil, trans oil and gear oil still don't come in blue to my knowledge.

If it's not the differential this is a good opportunity to convert to 328iC rear brake setup.

Thanks for the input everyone :)

I went out to run errands earlier this afternoon and the last time I started the car to come home, the grumbling sound was much worse. It almost sounds like somebody hitting a bong (pardon my french) only with a rougher and meaner growl to it. It doesn't happen all the time, but only happens right when I start the car.

I also crawled under the rear end of the car to try and find out where the fluid was leaking from and couldn't find anything.

I think an appointment with a mechanic is needed soon :(

Anyone? Bueller?

Anyone?

Do you have ATE SuperBlue brake fluid? Pull the top off the brake master cyl and check the color. If blue I would get it checked ASAP ... brake fluid leaks usually get worse quick. If you suddenly lose brakes just remember your ebrake handle is right there.

I was going to guess secondary air pump on your bong sounds ... but obd1 cars don't have one ???

Do you know what color fluids you put in your car? That'd be a sure help.

Check on color of fluids in your car and check your trunk and rear footwells or this thread is going nowhere in a hurry.
