Yesterday I had my oil changed at Firestone because typically they do a decent job, and it is easier than doing it myself. When i picked the car up I realized they put 5w-30 in it but i figured this would be fine.

Fast forward to this morning... I wake up to 2 quarts of oil below my car, and my E34 has never leaked so much as a drop of oil. So i took it back and told them to look at it.

They guy simply called me back and told me my main seal was leaking and it has been leaking for a long time. Funny how theres no stains on my driveway evident that it had been leaking before they changed the oil.:confused

I finally got them to put in a bit heavier weight 10w-40 oil to hopefull reverse the problem.

My question is could they of screwed it up for good? Is my car always going to leak oil now? I'm going to pick the car up in about 20 mins when they get done with it.

Hopefully it doesnt leak but if it does, i assume i will need a new engine as it was leaking VERY badly.

:help

They could have cheaped out and not replaced the crush washer. Or, check the oil filter cap. If they didn't replace the seal or tighten it enough it will leak.

they should have put 15w-40 in it in the first place. replace your rear main seal, and check if anywhere else is leaking... oil pan, oil filter hosing, etc..

good luck

I'd be pretty stunned if your rear main started leaking after an oil change. Tell the guy at the oil change place you're going to take it to a real shop to have it checked out, and if it's something they caused you're sending him the bill. If it's the rear main, well that's going to suck.

stripped/busted drain plug would be my guess. proper torque specs > firestone

id be willing to bet my car that they cheaped out and didnt replace the seal on the oil filter housing. ive seen this so often expecially with cheapo shops like firestone, oil changers, hutches, etc... update us. if it still leaks in the morning, take a 13mm socket/wrench and take off the top of the oil filter housing and look in the outter grove and see if there is a rubber seal in there. if not, there's your problem...

and people wonder why i change my own oil.

a. most the time they put the wrong grade of oil.
b. they dont change seals half the time.
c. they dont replace worn crush washers.
d. sometimes they dont even change the oil filter.

as they say, if you want it done good then do it yourself
