As far as the swap goes converting a 94 540i into a 6 speed, do I need a 6 speed wiring harness and ecu?

No need to change either the wiring harness or the ecu.

oh so they are both the same on auto and manual?
and is there anything u have to do to the auto wiring?

Nothing TO the auto. But you have to address a couple things for the manual.

Trans program error can be turned off with a ground on the x511 connector, Reverse lights can be wired in very easily, and cruise control is just as easy.

You'll also need to jump the starter relay.

Mac, I just came across this post while searching, could you elaborate on the c/c comment please. I have swapped a 6 speed into my 94 540 and the only thing that doesn't work is the cruise. Thanks.

The clutch pedal has a switch for the cruise control. On the auto there is no such thing. But the connector is there, plugged into a self-closing loop. You simply remove that connector, remove the self-closing loop connector and plug it into the cruise control switch mounted on the pedal.

Thanks guys, looks like I am missing that switch on the pedal assm, therefore did not know the something should be plugged into it. Now the hunt begins for a switch.
