I used a Craiglist crawler to spot all BMW Tourings in the us for sale. there was a bunch of i6s. I'm just partial to the V8's :D I was looking for a 318ti for my 15 year old

wow. There are some cheap 5-series touring out there. I have a 525iT with a sport package and i love that car. I've had it for about a year and i am trying to get rid of a "smoke coming out of the vent" problem. Although the 525iT is known to be under powered, I find it to be adequate. It is not SUPER fast but it is fast enough.

what is the story on the 540s? I hear that they're less reliable than the inline sixes. If that true??

Untrue. Both require pretty much the same maintenance.
