What are the grids behind the sunroof controls? Is it for the motion sensor for the alarm?

BMW Assist/BT I think, for the microphone.

They are the microphone. (voice commands, hands-free talking, etc.)

yes, it is a microphone. the motion sensor for the alarm goes in the dome light behind the sunroof.
