Hello, I'm a Bimmerforums newbie, and I'm hoping someone can help me answer a question about putting X5 rims on my 2004 X3 3.0i. It has stock 17 inch rims with a 40 mm offset. I'm thinking about buying a set of OEM X5 rims that are 18 inch, with a 48 mm offset, factory style 69.
I've found OEM X3 rims at BMWUSA.com up to 44 mm offset, but I am unable to find out if a rim with a 48 mm offset will work. BMW cannot tell me if they will work due to liabilities as the X5 rim is not stock for the X3.
If anyone has any input to answer the question I would really appreciate it.
Thanks!!

Seems like they'd work if you added spacers of 5 to 8 millimeters, ans associated longer wheel bolts. You may not even need to add spacers. Can you get a test fit?

Hi, PixMan. Thanks for the input. Unfortunately I cannot do a test fit as the rims are in another state. I agree that a spacer would do the trick. Another member said I might have issues with the bolts though as he thinks the X5 bolts are larger than the X3 bolts. I assume I can get that answer from my local BMW parts dept.

You think...but I'm sure, in the eyes of BMW, you're committing heresy, thus will be met with incredulous contempt at even suggesting it.
Best of luck.

Double check the lug bolt size. X5s use a 19mm lug bolt, where all other BMWs I have come across use a 17mm. This is not to say the thread size and pitch is not the same, it may be. Keep in mind the lug holes on X5 rims may also be designed for the larger 19mm bolt.

Good advice - thanks IslandS62. I was surprised to hear that my local BMW parts dept did not have that info. He said the X5 uses a 14x1/2x19, as you said, and the X3 parts manual showed 14x1/2x....there was nothing else listed. I think it actually stopped him in his tracks as well and he admited he did know the answer.
Thanks!

Richard - obviously you need to get a life. I'm secure enough in my manhood that I really don't care if another BMW owner (ie you) gets his panties in a bunch because I have rims from another BMW. Of the other comments I received, all were helpful and infomative, other than your hot air out of a blow-hole that was nothing more than a waste of time. Keep your future responses mature and constructive, and remember that part of the joy of owning a car is being able to customize the ride you want and enjoy.
Kindest regards,
