I would really like to be able to have one single all-season tire on my 330i all year long. We have 3-4 days per year in which I would have to drive 15-20 miles in snowy conditions. There are hills on my route to the office and I'm wondering if weight in the trunk would help on these few days?

If I did do snow/winter tires, what kind of tread life can I expect to get out of them?

Thanks gents!

There is only one (okay, there are now two) truly all-season capable tire on the market -- that being the Nokain Hakkapeliitta WR-G2 (or the older Hakkapeliitta WR). The WR-G2 is exactly what it sounds like...the generation 2 tire. It will eventually replace the WR.

They can be found at www.nokiantires.com (http://www.nokiantires.com) in the winter section.

The WR-G2 and WR are the only all-season tires that rate the Severe Service emblam in Canada, otherwise only found on dedicated all-out winter tires. The WR-G2 and WR can be driven year-round.

Nokian refers to them as "All-Weather" tires, so as to differentiate them from normal No-Season tires. I am not a fan at all of all-season tires, as they are a compromise in all seasons, and lose their grip to asphalt at relatively warm temps as compared with winter tires.

If this is truly your intent, I'd go with these.

If a dedicated set of full-one winter tires is, their life is of course directly proportional to their degree of use...just as with any tire. If you only run them for 4mths out of 12, expect that they'll wear down at half the rate of your summer tires. It's all relative.

+1! This is excellent advice, and excellent tires. I have found that Nokian tires rated for snow are long-service tires compared to others, offer surprisingly good dry grip, and run pretty quiet. A very high-quality tire indeed.

You shouldn't need any weight in the trunk. It would upset the balance of the car, and do little to improve traction. If you must, no more than 100 pounds.
