2003 BMW 525i heat and AC

Hi my dad has an 03 525i and apparently the stealership is telling him that his entire heating and cooling system is messed up and stopping the fan from spinning so he has no AC and no heat. They are going to be charging him something like $600 to replace. I feel like I remember hearing something about a recall for 3 series and was not sure if this is a common problem with the 5 series or if they should cover it even though warranty is up. Thanks in advance for the help.

Search the forum for FSR or FSU.
(Final Stage Resistor/Unit).

The good news is that a FSR is "cheap", approx $70 and is definitely a DIY item.
Try the warranty coverage first, if not then DIY.
