ok i'm about to do my first oil change on a 92 525it wagon. first how much oil and second do i pour oil in the pot before i put the oil filter in? might be dumb questions but i had to ask

1st let the oil drain out, then do your filters and rubber gaskets, then put the new oil in. 6 cylinders take 7 qts.

Please check your owners manual (if you have one)...go to the index in the back of the manual and look for "FILLING CAPACITES" or "FLUID CAPACITIES".
The M50TU engine in my old 95 525iT used 6 quarts of oil. And you pour the oil into the opening on the engine that has the square cap with an icon of an "oil canister" on it (see item #4 in the diagram below). BMW has no recommendation or instruction to pour oil into the oil filter reservoir...it's not required.
Hopefully you purchased an oil filter kit (BMW/Mahle/Mann/Hengst/Bosch/etc) that will give you ALL O-rings and washers...you should replace all of them...especially the crush washer on the oil drain plug...at every oil change (see oil filter kit below).
