I wouldn't go asking for Carfax around here. The going line of thinking is that if you're looking to buy a car, $20 isn't too big an expense for a month of Carfax.

they upped it to 40 recently. but, i totally agree with you. if you're shopping for an older ride, sack up and get a membership.

carfax is worthless. their sources are unreliable, confidential, and IMO biased towards worst case based solely on visuals (Ie bent bumper means severe frame damage, not it got bumped into)
they only cover certain states and only relatively recent activity.
if you want that done free, ask on bimmernut.
if it isn't a salvage title, and looks ok on a PPI or inspection spend the money.
the only real reason to check carfax is to see if it says fleet, salvage, or severe damage because morons believe everything carfax says and it devalues the car when YOU resell it. Even then if they are mistaken, or some negative information is given them about your car after purchase, you may still be SOL'd by them.

All true, but if you live in a state like I do which reports to carfax it can be a decent reseach tool when buying a car. Due diligence if you will, or if you want it put another way, he's avoiding the "should have run a carfax" thread after buying a car and it turning out to be a lemon. If you live in a state that reports info to carfax, and the car has lived most of its life in the same state, you can get some decent info. I know a couple people that have caught washed titles with it.

I ran the carfax. Regardless of what other ppl say, its at least good to see mileage, possible accidents, # of owners, locaiton, etc.
Not the final decision maker, but good to know.
I probably subscribed to the unlimited 4 times this year in my car search, so might as well get some more value out of it before it expires.
Anyone else want a carfax on their own cars for their records? I may razz any of you that gave this guy $hit on his request, but i'll still order it if its before my account expires.
The carfax looks ok cept the automatic :confused and being registered in a flood damange county. It was too large of a file to post here, so give me your email, and i'll forward it to you. Merry christmas!

Considering that BF.c gets indexed on google pretty quickly, and carfax scans forums specifically looking for this type of post, I'd edit it out before anything comes of it. That's most of the reason people frown on it around here. Just a head's up.

Thanks for the heads up, but is there really anything not legal about doing this? I'm not selling the reports, but then again, i didn't really read their terms and conditions. Doubt they'd do anything besides cancel my membership that i already am done with.
EDIT:
ok, i read the link. Guess i shouldn't provide these online.........sorry guys!

It's cool man, there's nothing wrong with being enthusiastic about helping people out, we've all just got to play by the rules around here.

Yah, no worries, i understand. Haven't been around here long, each board seems to really have its sore topics, so i haven't really learned what those are around here.
Merry Christmas everyone!

Around here, so far as BF.c goes, it's pretty much support the vendors, obey the rules, and promote the site if you can.
So far as the e34 goes, it's all about angel eyes and wheels.
