Hello,

Did all B35 t-stat housings had 2 sensors on them, or did some had 3?

Thanks

my car has two. :)

to answer your question, according to my search on realoem.com, some vehicles came with a third temperature sensor ("for vehicles with electronic engine-power regulation").

Thank you! Must be for cars with the electronic TB for traction control?

Damn, you're right! Didn't knew that. Why a third one? One is for the instrument cluster and the other for the Motronic system. Why another one measuring the water temperature?

Well, it's for those models without a gas wire (that is drive-by-wire technique). An electronic gas throttle is needed to use the ASC feature (automatic stability control) but to have traction control you need ASC+T.

Maybe should clarify a little bit more.

ASC
Simply reduces engine power to regain tire grip

ASC+T
As ASC plus that the rear brakes can be activated using the car's own brake system

My car has 3 sensors. And it indeed has a electronic throttlebody (EML) and a ASC

One must be for the Gauge in the dashboard, one for the ECU and one for the EML system for idle speed or something.

I would love to see a picture of your engine as the M30 EML setup is so rare.

Best two photos i have at the moment. Can't get any better for the next months as the car is in winter-storage.

I can't post pics yet, so hopefully these will link properly (just add http):

Don't mind the dirty engine; these were taken shortly after I bought the car.

totally, i didn't even know it existed until now :eyecrazy

was this implemented during certain years, or was it just rare among all the years?

I don't think it's rare, so far 3 out of 5 m30b35 parts car have been equipped with EML. Engine I got from a 91 735 had one of those TBs I had to change out to the manual type.

I think the EML system was much more common in the e32 735i, not seen any other EML equiped 535i e34 in my country and there does not seem to be that many around.

what he said. uncommon on E34's as ASC was an option on M30 based cars. Much more common on E32's where it was standard.

(EML was used in ASC)

I don't think it is rare. The 535i 5spd donor for my E34 Touring had it and it was a '91. It was a real piece of $hit, the car and the EML system. With 250k miles the EML light was always on and the car was in limp-home mode about half the time with barely enough power to accelerate. The guy who built my Touring wisely advised me to get a standard throttle body setup and convert it back to the traditional manual throttle.

That seems to be the only hang-up with the system. After 10-15 years, the throttle actuator motor gets gummed-up and the system goes into limp mode. A replacement is ~$1000 according to realoem. Apparently they can also be taken apart, cleaned, and put back together relatively easily.

Mine has only gone into limp mode 6 times in the year I've owned it. When I turn off the car, it resets itself.

Personally, I like having the ASC/EML system. It make me feel a lot better on the rare occasion that my wife uses the car. We all know how quickly the back end can get loose in the rain; this system does a good job of keeping the car in line.

To those of you that have removed an EML throttle body, is there a trick to disconnecting the control wire from the throttle? I've been wanting to clean mine, but I can't seem to pop that wire off. Does it pull off? Twist?

i am currently trying to source one of the electronic throttle units here in england for my E34 535i but not having any luck, are they plentiful in the states?

It may not be rare, but it's certainly uncommon. I've only seen it in pictures.

TomTippin - not too hard to find, I've seen 3 or 4 so far here. I am not sure how much s/h would cost to UK, I think USPS International is $39 if you want one I can source it for you.
