View Full Version : AutoX Guys, Help with Tires?
Hey hey,
How is everyone? I was wondering if you guys, especially those of you who have driven my car around an autox course, could point me in the right direction of new tires. The only tires ive ever had on my e30 have been Toyo T1-R's in 225/50/15. I really like them, but, from what a couple of you have said out on the course, Mich Pilot Sports would suit better. I need to pick up another set (same size though) soon since driving is just plain dangerous now. So yeah, what kind of tires would you suggest and where should I get them? TireRack doesnt have Toyo anymore, nor do they have the Pilot Sports in my size. Are there any local tire connections? I used to buy from Wonger, but from what I understand he's abroad now.
Any input would be greatly appreciated & hope all is well :wave

AutoX tire != good tire for this season.
Between the ones you listed, I would say Pilots would be better, unless Toyos are shaved to like 2/32"

Radial Tire carries Toyo.
I've never liked Toyos though. I had T1-Rs on my 540 and the sidewall was too weak.

Toyo makes its R1R in a 225/45. Michelin makes the pilot sport cup in the 225/50, and I think hankook has it's auto-x tire in that size too.

I'd go with Hankook. PS2's are way to expensive, they are great tires though.

The Dunlops I bought at the end of the last year are the best "street" autox tire I've ever had.

Pilot Sports are absolute crap performance tires. They have decent grip, but they have very little tread depth at the outside edges - this means they cord quickly on the outside with a normal alignment, and on the inside with an aggressive one.

edgeracing has the toyo's i think.
I've got the khumo's and I'm very happy with them. As long as I'm not off roading over curbs that is.....

Hankook RZ212 and the Dunlop Z1 Star Spec are the best value for the money. In fact the Dunlop Z1 is arguably now the fastest street tire you can buy. Either one of these are the best choices for autoxing on street tires.
The Dunlop Z1 only comes in a 195/55/15, but if you have 15x7s or smaller, I'd choose them over the 225/50/15 of any other tire. The grip is unbelievable. I have them on my civic and on track someone commented he thought they were R-comps.

The Dunlop Z1 Star Spec and Bridgestone RE-01R are considered the best "street" tires for autocrossing these days. Unfortunately their only 15 inchers are real skinny. So if it were me, I'd investigate the Hankook RS2. They are available in both 225/50-15 and 225/45-15.
Talk to Paul at Radial Tire 301-585-2740. Be patient. He's hard to reach sometimes.

I'll give you a set of R-Comps in 205/50/15 EXTREMELY cheap, Anthony. Either RA1s or Hoosier R6s, I've got extras, LOTS!
Wow, wasnt expecting that much reply. Thanks for the help! I'll be sure to call up Paul as soon as im back from school.

Verryyyyyy tempting. Would you mind PM'ing me some info & prices? I honestly dont know anything about Rcomp tires, but it would be a nice change out on the autox course.

I guess that's why the Michelin PS2 has been the tire of choice among all of the top runners on the One Lap of America for a number of yeas.

The real question is, how do they grip when the driver's view is obstructed?

Not surprising given that it's good in the wet and the dry and it comes in a huge array of sizes.
There are better choices, though.

So, to continue on this trend w/some of you, what are you all running in stock classes for wets? I'm probably going with Hoosier Wets to keep contingency available, but for those of you who don't care, what are your options? I've heard good things about R1Rs, Goodyear F1 GSD3s, full tread R888s, etc.
