Broken diff bolt confirmed. Now the question of the day is what is the best way to get it out with out stripping the diff case?

I was driving today and I heard a big pop and then a loud ratchet sound when I shifted into second gear. At certain RPMs the noise went away and seemed to feel normal, so I know I can rule out the my R&P gears breaking. I have had a thud every time I shifted gears for the since yesterday which I assumed to be the flex disc. i am picking up a new one on Monday. This problem does not however seem to be caused by the flex disc. what symptoms to them have when they completely fail? I am getting under the car tomorrow, but i am just trying to get ideas on what I may be dealing with.

Is it possible you did not shift completely into 2nd gear and when you accelerated you popped out of gear? This scenario creates a very loud clunk/noise, and has happened to me a few times.

^^ i wish it was that easy. I hoped it was but upon driving no faster than 5 mph I know it is something more. I also stopped and re accelerated hoping that was the case.

Diff bolt?

I'm going to have to agree.

Get your ass under the car and look. ;)

Diff bolt?Yikes.

To clarify, for the OP...

Front diff mounting bolt. There are 3 mounting points for the diff itself. 2 in the back, one in the front. Look to the bottom left of the input (drive) shaft and you'll see a big bolt in a carrier bushing. Make sure it's not snapped or bent.

now for this larger bolt do plan on retapping the diff cse or running one long enough to come out th back hold it there with a lock nut and washer?

I am going try and remove the bolt by drilling a small hole in the piece left on the back side that way the direction of motion to tighten my smaller bolt will walk the old one out. Then maybe I can re tap it for that larger bolt. Your idea was the first thing that came to my mind too.
