Well, it's been a fun ride. My car is getting up there in miles though and I'm concerned I'm going to be hit with a lot of maintenance all at once. This past weekend I borrowed a trade-in at work to get a dog since I didn't want him tearing up the leather in the 540. I fell in love with it. To you guys, it might be hard to see, but you had to be there. I snapped some pictures. Please don't hate but I can't see the logic in keeping the Bimmer when I have access to this for so cheap.

It comes with the anti-deer whistles. I don't like the fact I can see them, but can't hear them. I thought about adding a whistle tip in the exhaust so it can go WOOO WOOOO!

4 cylinder for increased gas mileage. And check this out! A stick shift!YES!!!

Shot from the back bench seat. Tons of room in this thing.

I know it's not perfect. Here is some touch up paint, complete with brush strokes. I'm thinking I can buff it out. But so what if it doesn't. It gets me where I need to be and rides pretty darn good. Just have to keep the bass down on the radio as the speakers can't handle all the boom. Fix it list includes a new thermostat as it gets warm at idle but cools down quickly at speed producing a heat output of about 3 degrees warmer than ambient. Gonna lube the sliding door as it's a bit stiff. And the rear door shocks need to be replaced. My son almost knocked himself out when he let it go.
My baby is up against some stiff competition, and I love you guys here, but I just don't know.:(

Think about it this way.........do you really want that old Caravan to be the only car you have to drive? How long will that last? 1 week.......2 weeks until you start to look for another BMW?
I know I just put my 525it up for sale, but I have another fun car to drive. Even then I know I will miss my e39.

Why not both? Caravan =Daily Driver.
Bimmer= Weekend Car
You said the caravan was cheap :dunno:

going broke to keep/maintain/mod a car is never a good idea. IMHO

get the caravan and cancel the insurance on the bimmer for the winter, get some mods done, clean 'er good and then come spring/summer switch the insurance back to the bimmer! save some cash insuring a cheaper car and just clean up the e39 hardcore.

I say go for it. Throw some shag carpet in the back, get baller walmart spinners, and install an electric supercharger and you'll be set with a stylin' and fast ride.

I've got my car(my mulletmobile, aka Camaro) for the power trip so I don't need to mod a van...C'mon guys, seriously?
And it handles ok. Nothing like the Bimmer but what do you expect? I don't autoX my 540 anyway so it won't be like I'm losing anything.
If I do sell it though, it won't be the last BMW I own I assure you.

NOW is definitely not a good time to sell.
It sounds like you will regret selling.
I would keep the car.

that van is almost as dumb as i6 owners with FI. i say almost because that van never had a chance at being nice, but an i6 at one point did.

The economy says it's not the best time but look at it like this. Say in today's market, on average I'll get 2K less than if times were ok. But what if I keep it and have to spend 3K on repairs? Or more? Then it would be pointless to hold on to it when in the future I'll be better off and can afford a new M5?

I like the van.. I think with a manual that makes it pretty rare. Since the auto trannies last about 10 minutes in those, the manual trans is must.

The problem with this question is that you already know the answer. you already know that you're spending too much money on the bimmer. you already know that the van is more cost efficient for you right now. you also already know how much you're going to regret it.

Too bad it was not one of those turbo models. That you be a nice ride with the turbo and the 5 speed.

I once sold my bimmer to get a another, reasonable car with less maintenance costs.
Lasted 2 months and then couldn't stand waiting for the other car to sell so I bought my 540. Now I've got 2 cars, and one of them is just rotting with no plates because the car market in my country has reached a halt. Shame since it's a good car but I'd rather pay the maintenance for my BMW than drive my Chevy :)
