View Full Version : Faster than a 540?

I've been wanting a 540i for a quite a while, I just haven't had the money because I would be a second car not a replacement. I'm almost ready to buy though.
Anyway are there any other stock vehicles under $10k that can beat a 540 0-60 or topend? The 540 seems like my perfect vehicle and I'm dead set on one, just wondered if there's something I'm missing cause it seems like nothing close to its price can touch it.

There's many stock vehicles under 10k that'll beat a 540i. Doesn't mean they'll be as comfortable or sexy.

Not sure what "faster" means to you but these are just two examples of other brands/models that are in the same class.

Edit: I could have my friend drop a 700 HP crate engine in a cheap chassis for way less than 10k and smoke any E39 in existence on a 1/4 mile. Is that what you mean by "faster"?

I've seen (and heard) some POS Mustangs at stoplights that could probably take me, and they could probably be had for 5K... but they don't have what the 540i has. Style, class, panache, and most importantly.... funk. If you ain't got the funk, you just ain't got nothing, baby!

Yes on the scam. Yes on the Fbody.
I have an LT1 Z28 and it will smoke my 540 but they are completely different cars and I'm damn glad I have the BMW to drive everyday.

IMHO, I wouldnt buy 2 exact same cars. Maybe 540+525/8/30 or 540+M5 but not 540+540.
Whats going to be the main purpose of this 2nd car? DD? Weekend/summer beast?

Lexus GS 430 is a bit faster, when I had my 540i I lost on a highway run. There is also few 1999-2002 E55 AMGs out there for about 10k$, they will put woopin on 540s, this is from same size class, but Im sure there is faster smaller cars for under 10k out there.

gs400 is not faster than 540, i think e39 540 is way underated they should be at least 300 on crank since alot of people dynoed their car around 260ish whp and that makes around 300 on crank. On other hand the gs400 is rated 300 on crank so no the gs400 is NOT faster than any e39 540.

bmw is not meant to do red light to red light runs. they are meant to accell from 60 mph up to 150+.
I own a 01 WS6 and it will beat any 540 red light to red light. I have way more bottom end tq than a 540, but it has a 5.7 vs a 4.4. that makes a diff also. From a 60 mph pull it is a close race.
as stated how do you describe fast.

........Anyway are there any other stock vehicles under $10k that can beat a 540 0-60 or topend? ..........
Insufficient detail I'm sure. Perhaps you are choosing a larger sedan because you need room for a baby, wife and another child or two? There are so many cheap vehicles out there that can outrun a 280HP 2 ton luxobarge, I can't begin to count them.
Try a $7K used Corvette or Porsche 944T?? I sold my Vette for around $10K a few years ago to buy a 540i and regretted it. Corvettes are available everywhere and the cheaper one's can outrun a most M3 or M5. They are clearly more capable of outgunning an M car when it comes to serious handling venues like autocross or road racing. The fastest M5 or M3 will not touch a 10 year old Vette on any track with corners and older M cars are invariably slower. Fyi, a standard 1992 Corvette goes 157 MPH and runs a 13.5 sec 1/4 mi...that was 15+ years ago. That is close to 13.3s and 155mph top speed M5 territory. The same 17 year old Vette will run par with a new V8 M3 on any road course and it will easily inhale E46/E36/E30 M3 and all M5. Nice Vettes are available for under $10K and they are are low maintenance machines with incredible durability.
If you pay under $10K for a 540i, be prepared to dump a ton of coin into it for ongoing maintance and repair. Purchase price is misleading and generally inversely proportional to cost of ownership lol. It is easily going to cost you more than a $20K Corvette in the next 5 years. Take it from a 540i owner who knows. Your comparison is focused on stock cars, so this leads me to believe that you're not intending on doing the wrenching. Good luck finding affordable service.
If your focus is on straight line performance, you should buy a modified car. I have witnessed Mustangs run a 10 second 1/4 mi while being offered for sale for $5K. This $5K car will put a $150K V12 twin supercharged AMG to shame in a drag race. The number of Mustangs out there capable of running under a 12 sec 1/4 mi is staggering because they virtually all have mods. A 540i will not compare.
PS: You also might want to consider cost of ownership and resale value in your bang for the buck equation. Older sports cars like Corvette have pricing that is bottomed out. You can own one for 5 years and sell it for what you paid for it..or more. Same can not be said for luxobarges of any brand, incl BMW and MB. Nice looking higher mile cars selling for $10K today will be worthless in 5 years and selling for $3K. They are simply too complex and costly to maintain as a driven classic. There are no buyers for 540i in later years with high mileage.

Prey...that's just wrong. Testing guts in street racing, especially where the contest starts at 55 MPH and goes upward results in death way too often. I personally know a fellow in prison who displayed your attitude...and his "prey" now lays 6 feet under in a graveyard. What a friggin' winner....I knew this fellow before it happened and his attitude mirrored yours. He was an intelligent kid with little or no sense of restraint. He used commuter traffic like pylons on a regular basis. Don't contribute; visit a road racing track where the course is designed for such use.

That's the common position taken by ignorant & nieve children. When someone gets hurt, I honestly hope you get caught and go to jail for manslaughter or worse. Stupidity is never an excuse. fyi, the fellow I knew who now rots in jail was exactly like you. It DOES happen.

OK, we can all relax because you're very mature compared to him....:lol:help
What I'm reading is you are very careful not to kill yourself because your family relies heavily upon you. Great. Now, what you totally fail to take into account is the "punk in the GTO". He will willingly wrap himself around an oak tree or a third party or YOU while trying to pass the 39 yo mature adult driving the impressively fast 540i. If anything, the understated nature of your vehicle will encourage this kid to take unreasonable risks and go postal. He probably does not possess the necessary driving skill, decision-making skill or common sense and restraint. You have no clue wrt his abilities or even how many beers he had. Your use of the word punk says a lot..I bet he's a kid. You accept a challenge to an illegal deadly game which often results in serious harm or death. You foolishly appear to assume this punk in the GTO will not involve you in the wreck, when he has a serious driving fart. The law will place blame squarely upon you when the punk or any other person is hurt. This was the case with my friend. Maybe ask your wife or child their opinion about it? Maybe they're good with that? Best of luck to your family, friend. Let wifey know visitation is 9-5P.
I have to admit my opinion shifted from your general perspective over the last 10 years....Call me at 49yo after you see another 10 years worth of life experience. There is no excuse for your position. There are enough tracks around with the proper facilities to compete or learn to drive faster or better. I have learned that certain folks stick with risky and illegal street racing to better-maintain their fragile ego. There are fewer competent drivers on the street to put them into their place. Other folks do not attend track because they do not understand how to sign up to participate. It's worth looking into it, even if you drive a Kia.

Again, I'm pretty dead set on a 540i. Reason being that I'm a big fan of European cars, they're so much more refined than American, trucks excluded there are only 3 American vehicles I would consider buying(if I ever had the money), 427 AC cobra, Pantera, GT40.
I wanted a sedan because I just like the extra room. Also it had to have a V8 and a stick shift. I love the level of precision of the 540, interior, handling etc. Plus it's fast enough to satisfy my need for speed, someone asked what I describe as fast, 55MPH on up, I like highway performance which is another reason for staying away from American.
In my area good 540s go for around 12K or so which is what I would spend. Only thing I'm nervous about is maintenance cost, I do ALL my own work but I'm worried the cost of parts will be too much.
Reason for this thread was just because I was curious what other cars could run with a 540 in the same price range, not because I want other cars to look at.

Go for it. Be sure to get one with the sport package. The non-sports are too soft, and from what you've said, you won't like it.
If you can do all the work yourself, you should be fine. Aside from something going major wrong, most of what people burn money on is BMW dealer and indy shop labor rates, in my experience And, with the exception of the cooling system, these cars are built like tanks. If you are taking care of regular maintenance items the car should last for a long time.
Also, it's a great highway car -- perfect for dealing with those punks in the new GTOs and Mustangs! :D

As much as I agree with the majority of your post, I'm seeing a few inacuracies in some of your claims. For example, saying that a 92 Vette can cover the 1/4 in 13.5 seems a bit like BS to me. Everything I've ever known or seen has said that the C5 with the LS1 is usually hitting around a 13.1 on a good day. Now take the older '92 Vette with the LT1, 50 less horsepower, an inferior transmission, and I just don't see it hitting 13.5. I'd give it a low 14 to a very high 13 on a good day.
Depending on the year (I assumed E39 based on the 1/4 time listed)... M5's are far from a top speed of 155. That's where they're governed. Ungoverned the E39 M5 will hit 180ish.
Last and certainly not least. Please show me a '92 Vette eating a new E92 M3 on a track. Stock for stock the M3 will have the Vette for lunch.
Aside from that shennanigans, Vette's are very capable cars and an absolute blast to drive. They're definitely in a different league than the M cars. I highly recommend looking into episode 2 of the most recent Top Gear series. They drive the ZR-1 through the southwest

It is BS. Ask me how I know.
I'm sure this has been posted before, but here it is (so you can be your own judge, if you buy a car by "speed"):

^^oooo noooo there went my apex seal! lol sorry had to i had a 94 rx7 loved it till the motor blew and tranny locked up all in one turn (found a wall to stop me in a hurry)
since he's zoned in on the 540, i think instead of looking at ANYTHING faster than a 540i we should dive into cars in the same class. an E55 amg is not in the same class as a 540i, it is classed with an M5. vet/fbody/sport bikes are all in a different class of cars as well. of the top of my head i'd class the gs400/430 with the 540, merc E class, and whatever that jag was that is about the same size.

I had a beautiful Camaro S.S and I beleive a 97 trans am ram air (convert), these cars are fantastic and not all that expensive (insurance was good to me).
I would much rather the 5.7 vs the 4.6 / 5.0 stang(thats my opinion) ... Anyways with about 1500 dollars invested in the cars I was able to improve my overall performance by a "huge" margin. so this would be the best option for you.
I had a slew of Japanese vehicles (about 20 of them) all of them which could annihilate a stock 540i with little money, however most of these cars are (tiny) so I would not recommend any of them :)
advice ...... Don't purchase a 540i for straight line performance, I was given my 540i as a gift from my wife and I fell in love with the BMW craftsmanship (this was my first BMW ... yes I was a virgin) everything about the car is smooth and beautiful. Even though my car is about 10 years old I still find it as attractive as many new vehicles (and other BMW's) if you "really" want to improve performance hey invest in a charger after a few years, im sure most cars wont be able to overtake you on the highway :)
good luck, let us know what you get and post some photos !!!
Salvage title m5!
top end = 528i :devillook
+1, I took my stock 528i up to 153 one night with no problem. woah.:devillook

I'd give it a low 14 to a very high 13 on a good day............
You are guessing and don't know your Vettes. This is a poor way to pinpoint inaccuracy. The Z07 LT1 6 spd cars were solid mid-13 cars. The low 14's are reserved for later L98 Vettes & the very last of that series ran 14 flat with the ZF 6 spd. Low 13's are reserved for the LT4 which actually outran the LS1 in some tests and occasionally kicked LT5 butt. Slower tracks typically clocked LT4 at 13.3 sec and LT1 at 13.7.
Note the zero detail list of mystery tests above shows LT1 at 13.7 and it also shows an L98 version with about 55 less HP doing a 13.9.
The ZF 6 speed LT1 tranny is hardly inferior to the T56 lol. The only LT1 Vette running high 13's came with a 4 speed automatic or a sissy driver.
It is BS. Ask me how I know.
How? The spurious datapoints posted by 3rd party says an L98 with 55 less HP than an LT1 runs a 13.9s 1/4 mi. Are you telling me 55 more horsepower will never produce a 13.5 under any condition lol? The LT1 crushed the old L98 truck motor with 1500RPM moire headroom and the HP peak held to redline. Shifting was entirely optional.
I was thinking the same thing. A 10 year old Corvette eating an M3 around a race track???
In a straight line maybe, but around a track...with CORNERS???
Have you ever even been to a road race track?? You are speaking with a BMW owner who logged 50K miles on winding road race tracks. I have boxes full and walls covered with Solo II trophy's from going fast around CORNERS and even instructing other's how to do so.
Let me know when you find an M3 with SLA suspension on all four corners 50/50 weight distribution with fred flintstone wheels. The M3 is basically a tweaked sedan with flared fenders and 2 doors missing (except E36). The mcpherson struts in the front are nothing to brag about at all. The wider and lower Corvette design inhales BMW M3 on a handling track of any sort. The effective wheel rates found on a Corvette with optional suspension are 4x higher than those found on M3. This advantage applies to Solo II thru high speed road track (Pocono, WGI etc). Go to some grass roots car forums and see which stock cars post fastest time of the day again and again. It ain't M cars. Occasionally a $100K Carrera beats out the Corvettes in Solo II. On the road tracks, the Corvette crushes all comers and has been running par or better against Ferrari's costing 2 to 3x in the fastest road racing classes. The M3 is placed in a slower class for obvious reasons. Get out the SCCA results and review them. Hey, you really need to participate in track events and visit some model-independent road track forums that are not specializing in BMW. In such forums, you will meet many BMW track enthusiasts who accept the fact that Corvette has more potential in stock form when comparing similar vintages and in modified form, it goes much faster for far less money. The M3 has never been par with Corvette in road racing. Frankly speaking, the M3's claim to fame is beating sedan-based ponycars like Cobra and F-body in the corners. The M3 has had reasonable success over the last 20 years in sedan and ponycar class competition against cars costing 1/2 to 1/3 as much. The M3 has always been respected for class-leading sedan cornering and braking.
PS: Tunnel vision is an ailment you get when you are a boy with limited experience living and breathing one marque (ala' Bimmerboy). Time to open your eyes and quit singing the BMW anthem. BMW's are impressive premium saloons, not world class sports cars.

Wait? what are we arguing again?!? lol I never said a thing about TPI motors.
I called BS on the "92 Vette can cover the 1/4 in 13.5" statement and I'm sticking to it. No way can a stock 92 man/auto LT1 on street radials clock 13.5. I call 14 flat & thats w/an experienced driver.

Well if you live in the UK then a 540i will put you in the top percentile of fast cars, as everyone here can't afford big engine cars so most people (including our version of badboy street racers) drive 1.0, 1.2, 1.4, 1.6 and 1.8 litre cars like Vauxhall Corsas, Ford Fiestas and the likes.
Sometimes there is a Fiesta or Focus ST but if your under 25 in the UK chances are you wont be able to either get or afford the insurance (which is REQUIRED in the UK)
There are alot of german cars though, but most are 2.0 litre or less, I have only been out done on a motorway twice and those times were off a 2008 M5 and a Evo 9.
List of cars i've beaten - lots - including a Subaru Impreza (dont know which one though) - which is not bad for a 12 year old luxobarge.
I wouldn't advocate racing in town streets, I do beleive in being able to open it up a bit on a empty motorway, keep it safe and theres no problems.

Wait? what are we arguing again?!? lol I never said a thing about TPI motors.
I called BS on the "92 Vette can cover the 1/4 in 13.5" statement and I'm sticking to it. No way can a stock 92 man/auto LT1 on street radials clock 13.5. I call 14 flat & thats w/an experienced driver.
You are confusing motors and sticking with error. All "best times" are with an experienced driver because it's a car capability test.
The TPI motor ran high 13's as posted in this thread and the LT1 manual with 55 more HP ran 13.5 thru 13.7 in most published independent tests of that era. The LT4 had 35 additional HP and ran between 13.1 and 13.3. The LT1 was not slower than a TPI car (an issue you cleverly skirt) and it sure as heck was not slow as the noseheavy 540i/6 that has less HP, peaky powerband, 300lbs more weight, narrower tires, 9-5/8" slippy clutch and runs 14 flat. This is what you are claiming, yet I owned and raced both for many years. Try owning and racing both for 5 years to gain my experience and then call me wrong. You know nothing about Corvette.
LOL...not at all :)
I just take offense when someone who does not know me starts throwing stones and sees that just because I own 3 BMW's, assumes that I am a fanboy and have not driven any other car in my life... :nono
But, this is not important...Back on topic :)

I did not know you owned 3 BMW's. I was responding to your statement that the M3 outhandles a Corvette in corners and assumed it was made out of ignorance instead of being a joke. You need to recognize that fanboy and bimmerboy are synonym's. I simply took your username fwiw.

I looked at the c5, GTO, 05+ Mustang GT, and Mercs. What it comes down to is what you want out of your car. If I wanted pure performance, I would have bought the c5, but that is not what I was after. I wanted something fairly fast, but more important, nice to drive around town when I wasn't gunning it from stoplight to stoplight. I know there are cars out there that are faster, but not too many of them look better too :D
If I could have my way, I would remove about 300lbs from the 540i and drop in a ls7 (or ls9) and have the best of everything.

This is great and all, but I believe the only thing I was referring to was your original statement that a 1992, 17 year old, LT1, Vette will run par with the new M3. This statement is false. I'm far from on a BMW high horse and I agree that Vette's are very capable vehicles. The LT and LS series motors are some engineering marvels even with their so called "old" pushrod (or cam in block if you'd like to sound modern) technology. Who cares if it's old technology... It's still producing great numbers and is proven to be reliable. Not to mention the strict geometry of the two vehicles is completely different. You're comparing a complete 2 seater sports coupe to a 4 seater coupe which has been made sporty. I don't even want to get into the argument of track prepped vs stock. ANYTHING can be made fast.

This is great and all, but I believe the only thing I was referring to was your original statement that a 1992, 17 year old, LT1, Vette will run par with the new M3. This statement is false.........
A 17 year old C4 Z07 Vette is a second slower than the new M3 in the 1/4 mile, but it weighs almost 400lbs less and will still run par or better on certain autocross tracks and race courses that reward handing, low cg, lower weight and 9-1/2" wide front wheels instead of just straight line go pedal-mashed acceleration. Depite glowing reviews for it's class, the porky M3 V8 is not a handling weapon. The M3 weighs the same as my 540i/6 with spare tire removed, according to calibrated track scales. Both cars are just plain fat pigs. I have not yet seen evidence that the luxobarge M3 V8 runs circles around the lighter E46 M3 or earlier euro-spec E36. Stock for stock, an LT1 Z07 Vette has it's way with E46 M3 on many tighter tracks. I am quite familiar with the best times achieved on technical tracks in my area like Mid Ohio and stock E46 does not win out. Time will tell more about the current version. You can not make an accurate declaration of superiority that applies to all tracks because the relative strengths of the two cars vary widely.
I will go further and suggest that certain 22yo stock Z51 L98 Vettes were proven to run near par with Z06 in autocross. Pro Solo National Champion Roger Johnson proved this beyond doubt in A-B track tests. In light of this fact, I think the aging 250 HP L98 Vette C4 automatic may well outgun an M3 V8 butt in an autocross with an equal driver. Spec sheets don't tell the whole tale.

nick,
I have difficulty communicating with kiddies who resort to namecalling (like you did) when they have absolutely no experience or techical knowledge to support their position. If you review my seemingly negative posts, you will realize they are largely defending my technical opinion or provide further info in support of my position when it's being questioned or doubted by someone in a rude manner. Sorry, but I can't sit silent when an offensive & ignorant BMW fanboy attacks me. I owned & raced both cars and I know a bit about them. This is not bragging at all; my opinion was unfairly labeled as BS in an area where I have substantial first-hand experience and background. I am not jumping down folks throats calling them names, but like many juveniles, you are.
I own a 540i and have quite a bit of experience maintaining it. Folks sometimes overlook vehicles that are better-suited for their needs. I endeavor to solicit thought that helps folks consider all options.
Do you feel we should ignore or suppress all comparisons or alternatives to 540i? Should we pretend 540i is superior and perfect? Maybe we should begin banning members who part out 540i cars or discuss design shortcomings or weaknesses? This sort of extremist behavior is found on certain forums. I'm hoping this website involves more than 540i worship. Identifying weaknesses and shortcomings of the 540i leads to clever fixes and mods. My car has lots of fixes that make it more durable & I uncovered many problems through open discussion here. We should not downplay or suppress this stuff.

This thread was initiated to identify OTHER cars under $10K that go as fast or faster than 540i. Members like me who prefer to share objective info don't need to sit silent, eat glass or die when such questions are posed.
I do understand your concern for balanced discussion without domination, but questionable or erroneous tech info should not be left unchecked. Realize that a fair and balanced comparison of BMW 540i vs Corvette is almost impossible on a BMW-specific forum because the vast majority of members are loyal BMW fans with lopsided knowledge, views or unfounded notions about other marques. Sometimes it takes an overbearing and dominating *ss Vette & BMW owner like me to bring technical sanity to this sort of thread. Fanboys often reach ficticious conclusions, especially when contrasting opinion is suppressed as you so strongly recommend. :nono

On the same token, ask a bunch of Corvette guys on their respective forum which car is better, and I am sure you will get a biased answer there too. Sure the vette might beat a 540 or m5 in all out performance, but which one would you rather taken on a 700+mile trip.

I miss that car a lot. :( After I spent days doing a vacum hose job and hours of "cool down laps" it was no problem giving up the FD for the ease and fun of the ultimate driving machine.

I wholeheartedly agree. Discussion on Corvette forums is similarly skewed with narrow-minded vette fans & I speak up there in a similar fashion, often using my positive experiences with BMW build quality, fit and finish as testimony. With respect to a 700 mi trip, I would surely prefer to take my 540i except for the fact that I have not changed the radiator & evap canister to a zionsville unit. The chance of coolant system failure is something I must weigh. A Corvette is far less comfortable, but also less likely to eject it's coolant at an inopportune moment. My Corvette was never towed after a track day in 5 years of weekend abuse. My BMW seeing identical duty needed immediate AAA tow coverage upgrades and reliability issues have been challenging.

I admittedly do have a bone to pick with folks who propagate or promote BMW tunnel vision, believing that BMW's are superior while falsely declaring other marques as complete junk, slow etc. I prefer balanced discussion and when it's not available, I try to inject some sanity of that sort. Perhaps my frustration dealing with skewed, biased opinion shows. This is the case when I'm on the corvette forum too, by the way. If you are older than 90% of the folks on this board, I can only guess the percentage for myself at over twice your age. OK, I'll accept he grumpy old man moniker without protest. Time brings pros (experience) and cons (baggage). I personally doubt that the average E39 owner here is under 25 years old. Most members with the word boy embedded in their userID may indeed be under 25. who's da man lol?
I'm an E39 owner, but I'm not about praise or worship of BMW or learning about BMW social events or joining in unfair bashing of other marques. My purpose on this forum is largely to collect and share technical info about the E39 and learn how to improve the breed. I also prefer to speak honestly and openly about it's strengths and weaknessess, especially when comparing it to alternative cars in threads like this one. Focusing on weaknesses is my forte' because it helps us come up with technical FIXES!! Forums are not about promoting the marque or suppressing discussion about recurring troubles or coming up with lame exuses, blaming owners for failures etc. Some pro-BMW folks even blamed drivers for premature clutch failures. I can show you threads where BMW fansboys blamed owners who failed radiators and clutches for applying the throttle too quickly. Oh, you're not supposed to do that. My involvement in discussion helps me learn to improve my E39, learn & make new discoveries. My behavior sometimes spurs excellent feedback from mute individuals when they feel compelled to offer alternate opinion and I welcome it. As you can see, my objectives wrt E39 would not be met if I visited a Corvette forum, as you've suggested.
If you feel the M5 or M3 is not a modified sedan, you really need to explain yourself. When I examine the technical underpinnings of these cars, I'm basically seeing a factory hot-rodded pedestrian 330i, 335i, 540i, 545i etc. They do contain some suspension bolt-ons/tweaks, motor upgrades and other minor design revisions. The same basic formula was used for a Chrysler 300C SRT8 and a Mercury Marauder where their standard pedestrian chassis are tweaked. Except for M1 and a couple other rare offerings, I have never seen BMW or Mercedes pretend their practical M & AMG car chassis were designed from the beginning for genuine motorsport use. Far from that, but this is why the M line remains so practical for regular street use. The fact that BMW's M cars and MB's AMG offerings follow every pedestrian model release by at least a year is no coincidence. General Motors did not follow BMW M or MB AMG sport-performance strategy. The Corvette is not a hot-rodded Impala or Cadillac STS and the results are apparent. GM took a very different approach with CTS-V where they took the Corvette drivetrain and designed a new rwd CTS chassis to support it. This is how they're closing the performance gap on premium eurosedans.

Because I didnt rant and rave with seemingly biased opinions? Ive read through every single one of his posts and he keeps talking to other members as if were all narrow minded and unable to see anything pas our steering wheels. I know damn well I could easily buy a more reliable car, but I chose a BMW for unmatched excellence when it comes to the interior, ride quality and performance.
Sure I could easily go buy a Corolla if I wanted excellent reliability and grat gas mileage, but I would rather sacrafice those things and invest my heart and soul into a car i love, a car then when i drive it gives me something back other then point a to point b transportation. Ive driven lots of different cars in my life.. and i can say that nothing really compares to the absolute thrill i get from my BMW.
Sure, you say the corvette is so great so grand.. if so, then why can you push in the rear bumper by hand on the new z06? Im really not a fan of American auto makers, ive been an import fan since day one and i can name a hundred different cars that look better and are a better deal then the corvette. Im very disapointed in the americans ability to produce a good Litre to HP ratio..
Sure you can buy a foxbody for 1k and build it into a monster at the track, and sure your corvette can ahndle a road course like no other.. but the Corvette is designed specifically to be an amazing sports car, where as the 540 is designed to be a high powered luxery sedan.. thats comparing apples to oranges.
I can name alot of cars you can buy competitvley priced that will beat a vette around the track and be much more reliable..
Moral of the story.. I dont think everyone here chose to own a bmw because of reliability and track performance, everyone has there own reasons, and you have no right to belittle them for there opinions just because they do not agree with you.

After re-reading this.. how is this any different then what Dodge does with the Srt4, srt6, srt8? How about fords new mustang? theres the s281, gt, rousch, gt350, gt500... how many different variations of a car can you have? and where does the line get drawn?
The m5 and m3 are designed to be super sedans. Im sure if BMW wanted to make something that could compete with the corvette.. they would have no problem. But thats not the company they are.. they design and make excellent high end luxury sedans.

I dont see why you guys are bashing on Lscman... all he is doing is putting out information thats relevant to what the OP is asking for.... sub 10k car that can beat the 540.
he stated his pick... and the reasons why... and gets called out... so he states his defense.... which I must say is a pretty solid defense....
and he isnt showing bias either... he works on both sides of the barnyard.
as much as you guys dont want to believe it... the m3 , m5 , m6 , 540i arent the best cars in the world.... sure they are fucking awesome and even the best at certain things..... but other cars will surpass them in other categories.
Im always open to different brands... and opinions..... this thread reminds me of the war between suzuki GSXR boys and the Honda CBR kids.
maybe honda s2000 (kbb a good one is around $9300) or mazda rx-7 (my cousin got one for $7k, so I'm sure it's possible to get a cheap one)
they are pretty quick cars, but not really drag cars.
I know nothing about muscle cars, if that's what you like, then lscman's advice is pretty good.

LSCMAN has a great deal of knowledge and a good way of presenting his arguments now heres my question to you what car beside a vette is faster than a 540i in either straight-line performance or auto X under the 10k mark
amen bro, amen.

You know what... I am going to be the bigger man here...
Sorry Lscman...
I am sorry I ever made a joke about a Corvette not being able to go around corners.
I am sorry I ever said that BMW makes great cars...
I am sorry for telling you to go play in the traffic...
You know what...we all drive BMWs here, share the same passion and love our cars and as such we should all try to get along as one big family...
OK group hug.

Curt,
I struggle to answer this question as posed because it doesn't take into account some "fundamental realities" or state your packaging requirements.
Specifically, I'm unclear why you're looking at a big sedan in first place. I chose 540i for myself because I have a family and I wanted a car with roomy rear seating and four doors plus a manual tranny. I forfeited a $10K Vette with far better performance than an M5 to get more room, more comfort and more doors. In it's class and price range, the used 540i/6 can not be beat because it has no competitors. The only competition is a bunch of newer cars like CTS-V that still carry high resale value way over $10K. Most sporty sedans in it's size do not have equivalent suspension and the one's that do largely come with an automatic only.
The other issue I strugle with is the reality that $10K used cars are seldom stock and most other models can be easily modified to produce huge performance gains for very littel money. The 540i is not a mod-friendly car, so it's performance mod opportunities are low, expscially if you have limited funds. Comparing stock-for-stock is insightful, but it's only useful if you're choosing a new car with a warranty that may remain stock for 5 yrs or more.
If the number or doors and seats are meaningless to you, then we proceed to car categories where the 540i/6 struggles to compare in performance. For example, an E36 M3 or 944T will win in a race with turns because they are much lighter. In a straight line, they are par or better and the 944T will break into the low 13's with chip and muffler swap.
With respect to autox, most any small car will outgun 540i including various Honda, Toyota MR2 or Supra Turbo, older 911, 944T, E36 M3, Neon 16V, subaru, A6 2.7T, Mitsubishi VR4 AWD turbos, Mustang etc. I personally don't like the 4WD handling. I've already mentioned older Vette which would be my top choice. The cost to maintain a 540i used for severe duty is very high compared to most. I've seen Ferrari's that take less wrenching. The A6 is another vehicle that can empty your wallet. I'm telling you this because after about 50K track miles I learned that puchase price alone does not fairly reflect cost of ownership and should not drive your buying decisions. This is the beauty of the Vette or older Porsche or BMW M that will not further devaluate.

See I have my 528i which is like my luxuray/ comfort car. But now I am looking for somthing pure performance between the 10k-15k range.

Lscman, very informative post!
Not that this would be a frequent discussion topic I suppose, but this post was almost archivable.

amen man.
i have a 2001 Honda Prelude SE and it outhandled and beat my friends stock 2000 540i 6MT on the track.
he's a better driver than me too, he tracks it a lot. I just can hit the corners way faster, but he almost overtakes me always on the straightaways.

Very Interesting post.
So if you have tracked the car and found weaknesses, It would be interesting to know what you discovered and how you solved it. Not many people including me, track their car, but If i can improve something in the car that will make it better in the long run..... I'm all ears. Tracking a car will surely accelerate the desintegration of parts that were not that great to begin with....cooling system is one of them and a concern of yours.
To which I have wondered about the 540 protection package, that radiator is over $100.00 more than the regular one, yet all the other mouting parts are the same. Could it be stronger???? or as people are shooting at your car and you are trying to get away and all of a sudden the radiator blows in your heavier than normal 540.... what's next.:confused

The easiest weaknesses to address involve:
1) replacing the struts with aftermarket premium dampers that actually hold hydraulic fluid for more than a couple years.
2) replace the overworked and failure-prone marginal thrust arm bushings in the front suspension with a durable X5 bushing or some other solution.
3) replace the plastic tanked radiator and coolant explosion tank with a Zionsville all-aluminum solution.
4) buy a sixpack of OEM clutches or find an aftermarket solution you can live with from an NVH standpoint.
5) rebuild the complete crankcase ventilation system every few years to prevent blowing the seals and gaskets from positive pressure
6) change the tranny fluid every 30K mi and run BMW LT2.
That'll cover over half the issues that plague street and track cars.
PS: the aftermarket Behr radiator is same as BMW stock unit. It costs same as Nissens aftermarket equivalent...both are dirt cheap around $200 and these all have weaknesses/issues. BMW just marks up the price of this junk to an unreasonable level.

Thanks for these tips!!!! Maybe ill knock out # 2 first, the radiator is fairly new, it blew already and 3 replacements leaked. Tranny fluid has been changed already, New Clutch is in and suspencion has been completely replaced. I'll look into the crankcase vent system.
