View Full Version : Removing the AC control panel? What about removing the center vent?

I can't figure out how to get the darn thing out and replace it.
I have a large, early '89 dual turn-dial and triple slider panel.
My illumination is out, but I have a replacement panel ready to go.
Also, how do I remove the center vent on the upper dash facing the the driver and passenger, just above the radio? I have a replacement for that as well.
There are two tabs which you will carefully depress with a screwdriver along the top edge of the vents. Slip the flathead in and express the dashboard slightly to locate the tabs which are about two inches in toward the center from each end along the top edge of the vents you will press the tabs down while prying GENTLY that side outward just enough to displace the tab from its slot then do the other side then the whole assembly will with some effort come right out. I've not broken those tabs or harmed the dash but I suspect such could be the result if too much force ,too little patience and too little care are exercised. I bought a new set to replace mine which are loose and won't hold their position without some shim stuck in which looks "Ghetto" but I have the Belden Cable operated switch on the Center Wheel and the Vents I bought, which are Brand New BTW use the electronic wheel control and have just the plug so I have them for sale if anyone read ing this is interested.

I thought there was a screw from underneath?

If you're talking about the dash vents I pictured there was no screw involved in mine . .. I also have changed the bulbs in the climate control panel. No need to replace the whole thing unless its otherwise faulty. It will need to come out and be disassembled to get to the small bud type bulbs but its easily doable .
Maybe you're thinking of the Dash TOP Vent.
Here (http://www.nmia.com/~dgnrg/page_37.htm)is the pic about which i had been thinking when i said the Bentley had pics. I looked thru it and it does not . It says there are four and I only mentioned two.I think when I started with the top two and got the upper edge out the whole unit freed up and i didn't need to press up the lower two tabs but i guess they're there.

yeah I thought there was a reference to one in the Service manual.
IF no screws I'm pissed. I could have replaced the wheat bulb for the vent 2 years ago.
