yesterday i was trying to do my motor mounts, and to take the driver side (http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1123605#) out i tried to take out the alternator, and then the alternator would not come out. its loose, but it wont fit out unless i take the oil filter (http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1123605#) res apart. is there something i'm doing wrong to do the driver side motor mount on a m60? any tips would be much appreciated. btw i have the car on a hoist.

Loosen the 2 10mm nuts on the filter housing so that the filter housing will slide out about 4mm. At that point, it's possible to rotate the alternator out. However, it's easier if you double nut the studs that support the filter housing and remove them.
No need to remove the alt to do the DS motor mount. Lift the engine, line the mount up with the subframe, tighten the top nut and lower the engine.

oh my lord! why are you taking out the alternator?!?
dude, do what lowel said! if your having problems loosening that top bolt on the mount you can get to it with a very long extension and a swivel..you would have to go through the lines of the abs pump but it works like a gem!
btw lift the engine up by resting the flat part of the oil pan on a block of wood. just use slight pressure to lift the engine. you may need to take the fan shroud off to prevent the fan from hitting it.
