View Full Version : Do MK Motorsport wheels require hubcentric rings?

The reason I am asking is I am trying to diagnose some rear end up/down vibration. I had a shop take a look at it while I was in for some other work and they said the tires were out of round and that I should also check to see if the wheels need hubcentric rings, as that could be one of the issues. The car had the wheels on it when I bought it this summer, so I would think they would have already had them if they needed them, although I suppose stranger things have happend.

Is there anything else back there that would cause that up down vibration? The shop also said the rubber was dry and cracked on my pitman links, but that they were still tight and didn't need to be replaced. Does that sound right?

Thanks!

pitman arms, shock mounts, RTAB's, Subframe mounts and yes, hubcentric rings. Just measure the diameter of the MK vs your spare.

Thanks for the info. Does anyone know the size of hubcentric rings I would need? I am at college right now so I can't measure the center bore myself.

no because they shouldn't need them unless they were bored to fit something else.

you have to measure it.

missing CV flange bolt would cause out of balance.

old tires would cause it.
out of round wheels would cause it.

I thought MK's were E39 fit; i.e. 72.56 - 74.1 mm hub rings....

hmm, confusing indeed. I think I'm going to go have a tire place look at the wheels and rims to make sure they are ok, and I'll have them check on that too. I've never had the rear wheels off so if rings are the case than something must have shifted over time. I've had the fronts off a couple times before but never payed much attention, guess I should have..

I really hope thats the case! Hubcentric rings are way cheaper than new tires.

This is strange I thought I needed rings but they didn't fit.. Still my vibration went away with a different (not new) rear tire. I could actually see it was separated.

but they were still 8 years old, they would've fallen apart anyways, but maybe i put the lumps in them by not running rings?

you don't ever remember seeing problems with the tires right? oh well...

funny thing is i never ran hubcentric rings with my style 5s?

i can get um at tire rack right? what do i order, just e34 rings?

yeah.. remember when we mounted them on your car? lue there and we didnt see anything wrong with the tires.

just get some e39 to e34 hubcentric rings.

as far as center hubs for mk motorsports.. i do run them but i am unsure about the exact specs on them. most likely an e39 to e34 adapter too.

Hey, I've got a set of MK type 2's and hub-centric rings are required. But high quality wheels like these have a special built-in feature that were made from MK. The rings are snap-in type and are green in color (like green anodized and MK made).

I would take a picture but I'm at work now. I'm sure those plastic hub-rings would work too. But those original MK ones are nice, metal and don't fall off every time you dis-mount the wheels.

Hope this helps

Ok, some updates ony my vibration issue. First the wheels I have are make for the e34 and have the correct hub bore. I took a more detailed look at my rear tires and found the inside was warn complately out, which makes sense since I have a fair amount of negative camber. So I ordered up some new rear tires and got them installed today. Now the bad news, I found out today while the tires were being installed that one of my wheels is bent! About half of my virbration went away with the new tires but because of the bent wheel there is still a considerable amount there.

So now I have a delima and need some help. Discount tire said they can't straighten the wheel because it is aluminum and will crack. Is it possible to fix an aluminum wheel? I found these guys http://www.rimandwheelworks.com/straighten.html online who say they can. Any thoughts? Right now they look like my best option because I really like my wheels!!

Any one happen to have a spare 8.5x17in Mk Motorsport MK1 wheel laying around or know where how I can get one?

Thanks again guys, I really appreciate the help!

yes they can be repaired. no tire shops won;t do it.

I know there are two or three reputable wheel straighteners / refinishers/ repairers that have been discussed here in the past.

How much would you pay for a set of nonstaggered MK1's with good tires. They are chromed but it is chipping off.

I'm asking because I found some but I want to make sure I'm getting a good deal. I know what a set of staggered would go for, but no idea about the nonstaggered.

Oh, and they are 17's

I paid $1100 for mine.. same condition.. but they are 18's

It's quite a process to get the chrome off. If you don't have a local chrome plating shop near you, you might be spending a lot just to get the chrome off. I went the easy route and got them blasted and PC'd

Did you sand or media blast them.

So $700 would be a good price?

First, I spent $400 making sure they are straight and true. Then $250 to get them media blasted and powder coated.

I'd say $700 is a good place to start.
