oh believe me, karma is a b1tch.
my car got vandalized a while back, I knew the person who did it but I didnt retaliate because I know that by gettin revenge just leads to more violence, so I left it up to karma.
low and behold, I bumped into a good friend of his, I then asked his friend how he was doing and his buddy told me that hes been in jail for a while now.

Thanks Yoshi, im not retaliating due to the fact that it will only bring me down to the person who did it's level. Yea its gonna be hard all i want my car ready for is bimmerfest in May :) of next year. Its a long road but its gonna be even better knowing i did it the proper way.

Hey Dtm sorry to hear about that, thats a real bitch. Before sanding you should wash the car with sunlight dishsoap a few times to remove trace oils from the fluid. When you dont remove the fluid before sanding you can actually push the oils deeper into the paint surface as the surface is opened from sanding. An industrial automotive paint degreaser such as PPG's DX330 is a good idea too. If you have a DA sander and compressor use it, a DA is cheap and the 6" discs will make qwik work of feather edging and give you a better finished product. R.

If you have any information how to sand down the car help me out all im using is this three pack from home depot for metals. It came with Heavy, Medium, and Fine grit.
Buy some wet dry sand paper and use 320 grits (wet) before spraying it with primer. Use 400 grits (wet) after you have sanded the previous primer and spray with additional primer. Sand the last coat of primer with 600 grit (wet)before shooting it with your color. Sand the color with 800 grit (wet) before shooting it with clearcoat. And sand the clearcoat with 1000 grit (wet) befor buffing.
You should see if you insurance company will cover this if you still carry comprehensive insurance on the car.

whoa, i'm sorry man, but you're handling it better than 99% of the people i know. i'm pretty sure even the pope would be hurling a queen anne chair or two if someone did that too his popemobile.
anyhoo, looks like you're on track with the prep work. if you can get primer on it and get it all sanded and feathered together, you might consider a $500 MAACO paint job. do as much prep as you can, remove as much trim as you can, then take it to them. or find a local shop and explain your dillema, tell them you want to do as much prep as possible to keep the costs down and get their advice. one of the painters might do it on his time for cheap.
just remember if you find the culprit, revenge is a dish best served cold. good luck!

Awwww man, that sucks big time. Sorry this happened. What ever is on there you need to make sure it's all cleaned off or else you will have adhesion problems in the future. Is that bare metal in those pics? You will need to get some epoxy primer for bare metal. No rattle can shit for BMWs!
Clean...
Clean...
Clean...
then sand with some 120 or 150
Then shoot the epoxy
Scuff the epoxy
Body filler and sanding for dents and depressions
Shoot Primer/surfacer
Block sand with 220
Clean with degreaser
Shoot Primer/surfacer
Block sand with 220 then 320
Clean with degreaser
Shoot Primer/sealer
Final sanding with 400 to 600
Clean the car well with tack cloths and degreaser
Shoot two coats of base color
Shoot two or three coats of 2K urethane clear.
Let the clear harden for a month or two
Cut & buff
Polish
Wax after 6 months to a year
You could probably bypass some of the block sanding steps if your bodywork is pristine. The finish you'll end up with will be as good as OEM

Wow, you really are taking this well. I really impressed with your reaction. I'm not an angry person by nature either. I don't know what kind of guy would do this just for kicks though. Nobody I know would be that stupid.
But since you know the guy and he did this, my guess is that you aren't as crazy as me. Which is good from a PC point of view. Ya see, when your neighbors see you carrying assault rifles, 12 gauge riot guns, and crates of ammo/MRE's into your home- they tend to leave you alone. That's just my experience. Amazingly, I've never been vandalized.
Back on point, I really admire how you're handling this. I would not handle it in such a graceful way twice. I really, really wouldn't.

I'm all for you wanting it your way but you should seriously reconsider it.
A few buddies and I purchased a decent E30 back in 2004 and repainted it by hand matte black. It was a spray can job, although well-prepared.
It turned out awful and basically ruined the car. I'm still upset that us stupid high-school kids took a nice Cirrusblau E30 and ruined it. :(

Proper paint would be black base with the new PPG flat clear.
Don't take paint advice from rodders, even though they typically use flat colors.
Like I said, use the new PPG flat clear. Might be called satin.
Regardless, I see cars that are flat or satin, but not necessarily black because of this clear. It's better than just a single flat color, because the clear provides excellent protection compared to other methods.
VERY good thread regarding this... mentions the new PPG clear a few times near the end, but there are a few guys that have done a rattle can job, but msot of the pics are cloudy and in the rain. I can't emphasize enough how much you should PROPERLY prep and paint in a shop with guns, professionally.
http://www.honda-tech.com/showthread.php?t=1512837
I know about this because once I purchase my next E34 I'll be painting it satin black. I've been doing research, lol. :buttrock
