Hello I am pretty new to Bmw's and I have just bought a 94 530i for my 17 year old. I know it had the engine replaced in 02 . My question is what are the odds it was replaced with a 4.0 Litre versus a 3.0 litre. Are there any tells that might help confirm one way or the other .

first question is, who replaced it and why.

look near the back of the intake manifold and it will say either b30 or b40. but thats just for the manifold. there are some numbers written on the block as well.

When the lights go from red to green, are you in front or behind the Hyundai Accent next to you? That should give you a pretty good answer to your question.

OK thanks Guys . It was replaced by the dealer under warranty, one of the previous owners got it replaced at 102,000 Miles .

My guess is cause of the Nikasil issue.

Funny , I'll let you know in a couple of days . I hope that the Hyundai is not the main competition for these cars :)

BruceNo, it's Kia, because Hyundai made it (well the 530 anyway).

i wouldnt be surprised if the b3 and b40 use the same o2 sensors anyways. crossed maybe? why would it matter which one? whats the problem?

To flex pipe guy - ...What?
He said it was replaced in '02 as in 2002...
To OP - good choice on getting your kid an E34. But yes, it would be obvious is they threw in an extra liter for free, you might notice that they left 80 extra horses in there. :D Good luck and have fun with it though.

I understand they would probably replace the motor with the same designation under warranty, But I thought the 3.0 was a limited run and was discontinued earlier than the 4.0 . From what I have read they are the same block.

I believe the bore and stroke are both larger/longer for the 4.0, but the block is the same outside size.
BTW B30 with a 5 speed isn't as slow as you guys like to say. I'd rather have a 530i/5 than a 540iA.
Now a B30 with an autotragic... haha, sorry M60B30 =)

I think if you wouldn't rather have the 540i/6, someone would need to check your pulse.

Well it is an autotragic that is for sure .
My son is not that pumped yet , I guess I picked it up because I have always liked the look of these . It was so good of a deal I could not pass it up though . My son gave me $hit when he heard I was a buying him station wagon :lol .
Thanks for all the responses guys , I have a bit of bodywork to do I have replace the front fender and straighten the front pass corner of the hood ( maybe just replace hood ) some other minor body work as well (Any one got any Hyundai badges ) :) Time to do some more research on these and see what direction I go .

It's still the same block. The machining it gets after casting is different.

We need to brick that brick.
OP, you bought your kid a BMW wagon and he doesn't want it? When you're done slapping the hell out of him I'll be a surrogate son :devillook
You can tell him I said that too, that there's someone that would appreciate a car like that and someone that bought one for me too.

If that wagon is clean, there are people on this forum who would likely trade you their sedan plus a premium in cash for that car.
Seriously, E34 people love the wagons.
