Hello all. My friend is driving a 1997 528i and wants to remove his battery for the wintertime as he will be storing his car. He asked me in he could do this? I told him he could but when he put it back in the spring he would need the codes for the radio and the o.b.c. Is there any point to him doing this and what are the codes that he will need? Also how do you input these codes. Thanks for your help.

There is no CODE for the e39 standard radio (or upgraded radio system). The BMW anti-theft radios that required a code when disconnected from their electrical sourcel...ended with the e36/e34/e32.
The fact that there is no mention of needing this code in the owners manuals...nor a place to "enter" this code should also be a tell tale that it isn't required. :)
The only thing your friend will need to do upon re-installing the battery is resetting the clock. And the OBC's calculated features like MPG etc will be reset to ZERO.
