is there any way to increase power in the o-3000 rpm range without doing some drastic motor work?

Cone intake and muffler delete seems to be popular.

Ahhhh, go for it.

Honestly, remove weight. Weight reduction is better than adding horsepower for more than 1 reason.

ha, good ol' muffler delete. does the trick every time!

but actualy, my dinan chip gave my car a little more "umph"
thats my recomendation.

or if you got a hole burning in you pocket get a custom chip from TRM and pick up M3 cams, and a 3.5" HMF tuned to the chip.
its Some engine work, but nothing completely drastic

Chip, exhaust, fuel injectors, cams - but the best bang for the buck is a differential swap to get a big, slightly overweight e34 moving (of course, you pay a penalty in top end and mpg) - but even a 10% change (3.46 to 3.73 lsd in my 535iM) makes a huge difference in getting and staying on cam. I have a really clean 4.10 lsd I would sell cheap if anyone wants it ($200 plus shipping).

+1. A diff-change is known as "The Poor Man's Supercharger", but there are trade-off's in the process.

direct bolt in for '90 535iM?

4.10 would be RIDICULOUSLY short for the M30! Just my $.02!

Changing the diff, if you don't do a lot of highway driving, will help around town driving quite a bit. It won't increase power but it will make it easier on the engine to get the car to move.

Cold air intake (with appropriate heat shield and air feed) may help throttle response. I know it was a tremendous difference on my S52 engine.

All of the 6 cylinder e32 and e34 diffs are direct bolt in on a 535iM except for the M50 manual diff which have the larger CV joint diff input hub that has 6 10mm bolts instead of 6 8mm bolts. You may have to pop out the output hubs - but that takes 10 seconds and a big screwdriver or pry bar. Us guys with M20s and M30s have many choices for diff swaps.

I really like a 3.73 lsd with an M30 and ran one on my Euro 635csi also.
