I was looking into getting HID fog lights for my E39. However, it seems as if to do the install, it is going to require quite a bit of work. Is there anything that is just a simple plug and play or no?
When looking a DIY on the 5-series board, a lot of modifications need to be made to the E39 fog light housing. Was wondering if anybody could shed some light on what I could do.
Are you talking about the DIY that I posted here (http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1103263)? As far as shortcuts go, you don't have to install error-canceling devices or route the wiring into the engine bay. This will make it a little easier. However, there's no getting around the removal of the shield or coring a hole in the back of the housing. These are two things you pretty much HAVE to do to make it work, unless you want to make things really hard for yourself. Though the DIY is long, I tried to make it as explicit and clear as possible. I don't see any glaring omissions that need light shed upon them.
If it was a simple plug and play it would've been pointless for me to do that DIY in the first place.

Right... Since you've got the square fogs, there's no way around it. if you had the round ones, it's simple plug PNP.

Square fogs: remove shield (bulb is too long to fit with it in) and just drill a half hole at the edge of the back of the housing to run wires. That's it, everything else is P&P. I even bought extensions so I could mount the boxes in the engine bay.
