It's the difference between 16 year old shitty oem clear coat and brand new paint due to a fucking drunk taking out the door and rear quarter. As it's my daily I haven't gotten around to taking it apart to have the whole thing sprayed yet.

Extremely awesome cars guys. It's probably just me but something just doesn't look 100% right about the wrong era OEM rim on a BMW. For example, E46 rims on E36s, E39 or E60 rims on E34s, E39 M5 Reps on E34s, etc. It kinda confuses the eye a bit. I don't know what it is, but it doesn't sit well with me. Again, it's probably just me.

it's not just you. a lot of people think the same way. me being one of them. Although, every now and then, a newer style is put on an e34 and it will look good.

(Necro time) After finding this thread, I decided to go with these wheels, but can't decide what tires to put on them. What are you guys running on your wheels? Was looking at the Yokohama AVID ENVigor 235/45 R17 and 245/40 R70 for the back ones. Maybe Goodyear Eagle GT or Bridgestone RE960 AS? Too many choices :) Do I go with 255s in the back?

I had a problem with them on wet roads, and I felt they tracked the grooves in the road. This is the third set of tires I have had on this car and they were the only ones that have done that.
I had that same sensation with a previous vehicle and it went away when I switched to Pilots.
I think next spring I will go for a set of Cooper Zeon 2XS. Two of myfriends have recommended them, and I have Coopers on the Explorer.

25lbs for a 17x9 wheel isn't exactly atrocious compared to other OEM 17x9 BMW 1 piece wheels.

ASX's are fine as long as you aren't concerned about handling.

The ruts on the freeways here are deep...(Portland...the land of liquid sunshine) and I don't have that issue, but the sidewall is pretty soft on the ASX...(I have wear halfway up the 'Kumho' letters...I corner hard) so I believe it. My tires are also skinnier...16x8 wheels.

The Zeon is a decent tire...but you can get Star Specs for the same or less money...Star Specs are AMAZING.

I guess you are right about style 32's. M-pars, style 32's and style 5's are all about 22lbs. I was mistaken.

Kumhos: If it's not wet, they do just fine. Gotta remember, I have a 525i...not exactly a 'tire smoker'...they have more grip than I care to use, so I am happy with them...they have a warranty and they also only cost me $82/tire mounted and balanced. I got every bit of what I paid for/expected, and I would probably purchase them again.

I don't like the kumhos on my e36, but I forget exactly what model they were. They're cheap and you get what you pay for. The contis are the best A/S tire I've found so far. There are better tires for performance, winter, etc but not all in one package (that I've found anyway). The contis go like no one's business in the winter and are suitable for MD snow, yet still perform well during the summer. :edit: Without snow, I'd look at the ContiExtremeContact DW. It's designed for dry and wet weather, but not snow.

ShapeShifter
08-27-2010, 11:59 AM
The one thing I really like about the conti's is they are very quiet.
They were adequate in the snow.
I have 275's on the back, so I do get a little hydro planing in torential rain.

I love tires with tread patterns similar to the ones on Louie D's red ride. Most of the majors put out a tire model with that kind of pattern, so you have a lot to choose from. I don't believe they're real great in snow though. My old M30 had a set of Hankooks with that tread and it slid pretty easily.

My dream wheel has been the staggered Alpina, and i figured this was as close to that as my bank account would allow. lol.
One thing I have grown to appreciate is how much easier the Style 32's are to clean vs style five. I use a micofiber cleaning wand that allows me to reach the entire barrel easily through the spokes. Not so much with style 5.
Just today i picked up a set of 17x8 style 5 for a buck and a half. Two need refinishing, 2 look quite nice. I am quite chuffed with my aquisition.

Classy. Well played, sir.

why thank you my good sir.

she's on h&r springs and i couldn't be happier with the ride and feel of this tire/wheel/susp combo.

Side note about style 32's: I'm not sure if its the worthless tire shop peeps or what but these things were a bit(h to balance and i kept on breaking the plastic hub rings everytime i took the wheels off, i now have the ebay alum ones and they've held up fine and are what i recomend if you go with the e39 style 32 set up. They are now balanced after the 3rd attempt.
