I am sure others must have had this problem, The steering wheel surface (leather grip) is real gummy or sticky. Anyone have any tips for cleaning this up. I always thought that was just a plastic steering wheel thing and the plastisizers leaching out. Any tips would be appreciated and thanks in advance. R.

well I was eating greasy bacon in the car and I had the sticky problem previously and that solved the problem. Loads of bacon lard. Or you could try some vinegar.

Not only will you go blind, says our pastor, but for carjacking, you could go to jail too...

Just keep moisture away from it. Whenever I leave my windows cracked at all the dew gets on the wheel and does that to it.

Clean it good with something like Lexol and let it dry. The conditioner I use is Effax, it is quite oily and takes a while to be absorbed so best to do when you wont need the car for a day.
If the smooth finish of the leather is abraded you'll never stop it from being a sponge without refinishing. I've used shoe recoloring dye and spray finishes with good results on other cars.

I have tryed using a leather cleaner but that didnt help, I will try vinegar next. Maybe saddle soap?

Last time I cleaned a wheel I used soapy water and a toothbrush, then a Mr Clean Magic Eraser.

I have an e36 m3 wheel with the thumb bumps and tri-color stitching. The wheel was dirty and sticky, and the stitching was hardly tri-color anymore. It looks pretty damn sweet now. The only downside to it is that some of the leather has gone suede, but that's not from what I did in the cleaning. It will shine up in time from use, it's not mounted on the car currently.
