I couldn't find anything on this board about properly cleaning the engine bay. What are some things to avoid? Should I powerwash? What to use to get dust off?

Is there a write-up I can't find? Excuse me ahead if one already exists.
Thanks!

No you would not want to powerwash the engine.

I'd use low pressure water (basically just pour it on) and avoid electronics if you can. Some go so far as to cover their alternator with a plastic bag and I know old E36 models seemed susceptible to flooding the engine computer with a lot of water.

Use an all purpose degreaser or cleaner, but be careful to dilute it or don't let it sit long because it can etch aluminum parts. I spray on, immediately work it in with a brush and rinse it back off.

After cleaning, I use CD-2 Engine Detailer...thankfully available again from Autozone. It's pricey from Midway online when you factor in their shipping. It gives a nice sheen and doesn't seem to hold dust as much as some of the other rubber/vinyl dressings. And seems to have more staying power as well.

Cover what sim said above

I lightly mist a cold engine, you can crack a block spraying cool water on a motor. I dilute Simple Green 4:1 or you can use an APC, make sure you dilute to the proper ratio, you can do damage to rubber pieces and various metal in the bay. I scrub the several brushes and lightly mist again. Wipe everything down, and then I start the car to dry off any excess moisture. Dress with CD2 if you can find it or 303. Do not use a silicone dressing, it attract dust and dirt.

This is going to help a lot. Maybe we should sticky some of these suggestions?
