Now its time to put the 540 in the garage! I have been waiting to do a ton of work to this car, and Iam ready. I will be posting pics as things progress...many questions to follow. Thanks for all of your input so far. I am totally stoked to get this car going!(audio system should be real sick;13" subwoofer in dash, Mac Mini and a 10.4" touch screen monitor) I'll be in touch...

why would you put a sub in the dash?

...because I can! Actually, to bring the bass to the front of the car. This with the correctly placed midrange/tweeter front stage can provide a very convincing sound. I am looking to achieve the best possible sound in the car, at any amount of labor. I have been in the audio industry for over 20 years and currently own a high end car audio shop in NY. This car will be one of our demos and will spend some time in my showroom. If you ever have the chance to hear a sub up front, check it out-very cool!

I don't get it, why do you guys need winter rides? OHHHH Snow. :D It's 82 today and hasn't snowed in Houston for 4 years. (and that didn't even stick to the ground.)

Question to OP.... I have seen the Mac mini mod b4, my question is, if I had an M would I have to get a new screen installed for it to work? I think having a mobile comp would be real nice.....

My winter whip was the 1st Bimmer I ever owned, my '88 535i. Now it's my son's DD, and I have an '06 Ford Escrap Hybrid (company car) for winter duty.

I'm no audio guru (like you), but a sub in the dash, is asking for a lot of rattles. If you're just doing it as a show car then sure.

I LOL at you.

Seriously where do you think you are putting a 13" sub in the dash? Have you ever had the dash out of your car? There is not room for squat. The only way to make anything fit would be to start hacking the hell out of the car.

I'm sorry but your "plans" sound downright ghetto to me.

Pfft. You make it sound like snow is a bad thing. There is NOTHING more fun than driving in snow in an AWD/4WD car. One of my favorite videos ever is one a friend took in the back seat of my old Grand Cherokee in the empty parking lot of a ski area at 2AM... I had a liter of vodka in my left hand, a box of donuts on the passenger seat and Tool blasting out the stereo. I did donuts in the lot for about 30 minutes, laughing my ass off... then I killed the VC on my transfer case :redspot

Put a 13" sub in your dash and your speedo will lose its calibration, plastic rivets will come loose and not to mention the ghetto factor is turned up to 11.

I have to agree. My trusted 82 Toyota SR5 4X4 long bed with 300k have given me 4wheelin fun over the years. It will probably climb a tree if asked:D

Well I guess I rattled a few feathers! This will be the 3rd car I have done a sub up front. The last 2 were IASCA World Sound Off Champions, one was featured in Car Audio Magazine. As far as space in concerned, Iam rebuilding the airbox and doing a reverse mold of the interior dash area. I was able to do the same thing in a Thunderbird SC dash and get the required airspace. And yes, I have the dash out of the car. As far as rattles are concerned, I normally add several layers of Dynamat and other sound absorbing materials to ensure there are no rattles. The last car I did was 7dB quieter at 60MPH than stock. BTW...There are no "plastic rivets" in the dash are. Anyway, I guess I will keep to myself with the audio mods. You guys are really cool about these cars but apparently my audio tastes are unique. :)

well if you are set on doing it- do it right and make us proud.

I guess I'm getting old or something but a front mount sub sounds crazy to me.

Trust me bro, I won't let you down! High end car audio has been my passion(and business) for over 20 years. I also will do it tastefully, carefully maintaining the mystique of these fine cars.

don't the newer bimmers have a small sub in the center of the dash? my friend's 335 had a 6-8 inch? sub in the dash straight out the factory.... at least that's where he said it was...

I'm definitely in support of this because it sounds different and you seem like you can pull it off. Just know that this car isn't a thunderbird ;)

Volvo c70s used to come with 8-10inch Bose Subs in the dash and sounded great, I'm sure its doable just not sure how it will look. :dunno

Props for being different

Thanks for the support. ...Thank god this isn't a Ford! I will have pics as things progress. Going to make a offer on a Jeep Grand Cherokee in the AM. Should be a nice winter vehicle.

I dont understand putting an e39 away for the winter... and I live where winter is worse than most places in the USA.

The only cars I put away for the winter are classics or ones with 500+hp.

My 5.0 has subs in the dash. It really, truly does sound amazing with the sound coming from in front of you.

Didn't stop me from putting two twelves in the back though.

This was my theory until I got a new paint job. Now, I'm driving the ish anyway :rofl

My winter at school is probably as bad as yours.

Take out the passenger airbag, plenty of room for sub now!

In for the progress...I think its an innovative idea especially in the e39. I've seen similar setups before and I'd be intrigued to see where you mount the sub. Ideal location seems to be where the blower is....but I'll wait and see..

Best of luck

My car is freshly painted as well. I daily the car in any weather conditions and plan on taking it out ice racing this winter as well (if we get any ice).

What kind of suspension you have on your car?
