I hear alot of people slagging the brand off alot. Is it really that bad? Over here they are the only seemingly reputable brand in car care.

One more quick question. Using a buffer/polish should you only use it for polishing? Should you machine wax or only by hand?

I am new to real detailing myself, but have done a lot of reading.

(someone please correct me if I am wrong with anything)

I think Meguiars standard store bought stuff is what people say is not any good. However, there are some product lines people recommend from meguiars which I do not think I have ever seen in a common store. I guess its a 'top shelf' line.
I've read the threads that show a professionals handy work and have seen meguiars used on many occasions.

From my research, to really polish (remove swirls and other imperfections) a buffer such as the Porter cable is absolutely needed. You will never get it any good by hand - not to the extent a real buffer will.

I am not sure about synthetic sealants application, but waxes should be applied by hand from what I have read.

Hope this helps.
I'll let the experts chime in now.

The Meguiars Mirror Glaze/Professional line is decent. Thats what I currently use. Soon I will graduate to Poorboy products.

It's really hard to paint an entire line with a broad brush. As usual, some are good and some aren't so good.

Even within their professional line, there are some good products and some not so good. But even that is dependant upon what your estimation of good/not good is. Are you looking for ease of application? Durability? Non-chemical smells? Able to apply in the sun? Inexpensive? All that and more plays in to how you might arrive at calling one brand good or not good.

Often times what you find with over the counter brands is that they are made inexpensively so the store has a pretty good profit margin built in to the product. Boutique brands that may cost more in time and materials to produce might not have that same level of profit margin built in so the store may be less likely to carry it.
