Well boys and girls ... anyone who has the HID cancellor similar to DDM's .. be careful because tonight I had installed them on my car .. Dan and Harry are my witness .. and the sh*t exploded .. no joke .. ripped a section of the cancellor like a can opener and stuff just flew out .. smoke everywhere .. i thought my car was on fire .. Thank god it didn't burn out my ballast or blub .. The light is still functional ..

Note: i did not purchase the cancellor directly from DDM but i believe it is the exactly the same ..

take a look ..

Was there a capacitor inside that exploded? See my HID fog lamp DIY (http://forums.bimmerforums.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1103263) for a warning on getting the polarity correct when making your own error canceling devices. I suspect that various after market devices are simply arrangements of electrical components that anyone can make themselves, so if your device was just capacitor that was placed in the wrong orientation that made it explode, it would make sense.

+1 Also why are you having Dan install anything electrical on your car? You should have called me. I was in the area.

it was a direct plug and play .. im not sure how i could have installed it incorrectly .. that is the reason why i bought it .. simple process for convenience factor ..

lol .. it wasn't dan ... actually harry just plugged it in .. no problem with the other side .. worked fine ..

Sorry to hear, and kind of funny too.
Nothing against you Tom.
I have the cancellors being shipped from DDM as I write.
Please no explosions!
LOL!

I meant to ask if the internals of the device itself were installed incorrectly at the factory. That's the most likely reason I can think of as to why the thing blew up on you. When I made my own devices the first time, I had to guess as to the orientation of the capacitor, I guessed wrong, and it popped. I'm thinking someone did the same.

FWIW when mine popped my bulbs were fine too.

pretty scary at first ..

btw, i just realized that the picture date is incorrect .. for some odd reason my camera had the wrong date .. it should be 11-2-08 .. same for the pictures on the projector fogs .. just fixed the date on the camera ..

I had two of these explode on me today. Pretty violent explosions too, with shrapnel and everything. These suckers are kind of scary, you definitely need to be wearing safety glasses when working on or around them. Well, I guess after a while you can probably count on them not being prone to blowing up.

I came across this and thought I'd pass it on:

Ah, that is a good one!

I'm still wondering where the polarity would be reversed on mine. . . The two spade connectors into the connectors at the H7 would be easy to check I guess, but beyond that, I don't know. I'll try to call DDM tomorrow.

Well, if I determine that mine blew up because my HIDs are wired with opposite polarity, then I may well want to buy them from you! If not, I think I will probably avoid them altogether. Mine both blew shards of metallic stuff all over. It really wasn't pretty.

Thanks though!

Thad

Isn't it cheaper/easier to get Navcoder and use that?

only works with GenIII LCMs which came started in 99+ cars; however, if an LCM in an earlier yeat goes bad, it will be retrofitted with a GenIII version.

Oh OK I didn't know that restriction.

Alright, the answer for me seems to be that the wiring in the Depos swapped the polarity around. . . The car wiring is correct, but the wiring of the H7 connector in the Depos is backwards. That must be what blew mine up. Luckily, so far I don't have the warning!

I'm so glad my car didn't trip the bulb out warning when I installed my OEM HIDs.
