View Full Version : oil filter trick?

Ok, changing my oil for the first time myself tonight. I've got it all drained, and I'm trying to remove the old filter. But it feels like it's bolted down. Don't want to force it and have something break. Is it just sticking bad, or is there something I am not seeing that I need to remove?

So far I've just taken the black top off the filter housing....oil is all drained.

I read the DIY on bimmer tips...and it just says to remove it. Just want to be sure before I force something that shouldn't be.

probably just pressure buildup. it should pop right out.

Give it a couple twists and tugs...Should come right out as nothing is holding it down.

cool...thanks.
Also, do I have to have the stealer reset my lights? Or is there a button sequence I can use to reset it?
1997...

Thanks folks for responding so fast.

i think the older e39's need a peake tool to reset everything.

i just confirmed that you need a peake tool to reset it, so you need to have a friend with the tool or a dealer do it.

To reset your service lights on the 97 and up you just short circuit (connect) pin #7 and #19(ground) with ignition key in polition 2 for a few seconds. Thats what I do on my 98 528i and it does the trick. Look under e38.org/ Oil service and inspection lights reset using a simple wire.

If this information is correct, then paper clip that ho.

^^ It works for all e39s from 1996-2000. The instructions have been written up many times; I've done it on my 2000 528i many times. Qsilver7 has the best instructions. Two similar threads for you with pics:

Thanks folks!!
Tonight was a very busy night. Got my water pump changed out again (faulty replacement), and got my oil changed...AND while the car was up, decided that tomorrow I'm going to cut off my rear resonator and cap the pipe. I'm leaving the stock muffler / silencer in place. But figured it will give it a LITTLE more growl without making it obnoxious.

Again, thanks for all the help.

If you still have green lights illuminated and the OIL SERVICE or INSPECTION light hasn't illuminated...I'd suggest NOT to reset your lights.

I only reset the SI lights when they have gone done to the YELLOW light and one of the warnings has turned on. That way, the brake fluid warning stays on track as well as the regular SI lights.

Note the "clock" icon in the SI display...that is supposed to be the "change Brake Fluid" icon:

The SI lights are tracked by fuel consumption...but since fuel consumption averages somewhere between 17mpg-24mpg...the mileage can be approximated to either the 10k schedule for the up to-98...and the 15k schedule for the 1998-up. Some owners choose to strictly track their mileage...and some (like me) track the SI lights (divide them by whichever schedule they fall under)...and some actually follow the SI schedule. :eek

Again, if you are one that chooses to do "intermediate" oil changes...I would suggest holding off resetting the SI lights until you get down to the YELLOW light & OIL SERV/INSPECTION warning. :)

My suggestions for Tool to reset SI lights: heavy gauge wire or needle nosed pliers (make sure you use #7 & #19 ONLY)...using the wrong pins can cause disastrous effects...each pin has a number beside it...so double check that you're using the right ones.

I've driven my car 25K miles since I got it and that light has never come on.

The '02's, if yours is anything like mine, is done differently. I forget the procedure, but it's done without getting under the hood, and no tools are needed.

i am fully aware of that, you have to put the key in position 2 while holting the odometer button and it brings up a menu. that is how you do the oil and inspection light.
you can also change the degrees from f to c.

Yea, that worked great. I took a short piece of wire, opened up my port and figured out which version I have...I have the one with pin 19. So I inserted the wire into pin 7 and pin 19. I turned the key to position two. Walked around to the engine compartment counting from 1 to 10. When I got to ten, I removed the wire and returned to the cab....where the lights were found to be reset! It doesn't get any easier than that.

Thanks again!

Not sure if you tried searching for it yet (I've posted these instructions many times)....but if you haven't...here they are again. :)
